I've just plugged Silas' weight and age (2.6kg at 9 weeks) into an online calculator which reckons he'll end up at 7kg - 46% below average whippet weight. Could this be true or do they develop less predictably than such a calculator can work out? Growth spurts?! I don't mind if he IS tiny as long he's healthy - we're only after a good natured pet, no show or race aspirations. Actually, I'd love it if he was fast enough to try out in a race but that'd just be a fun bonus! I'm just interested to know if (a) their physical development is quite accurately predictable and (b) how much feeding has a bearing on what shape they take in the early days?

PS Speaking of diet, is it normal for them to love the smell of beer?!! My Mum's labrador was alcohol phobic - went into reverse at full speed at the slightest whiff, Silas appears to love it.

PPS "Schmackos" - what on earth do they put in them that makes them SO much more appealing to him than healthy snacks?

One thing dogs are good at is making liars out of you!

We've been logging weights for years now. Our most recent litter produced a pup that was 5oz birth weight and now weighs 31lb! (she's Pixel on the graph in the thread I've linked)

The finished weights of the pups are

Pixel 31lb

Gudd 40lb

Teddy 36lb

Stanley 28lb

Benson a wopping 45lb!!

These are all non-ped racing whippets and whilst some on the graph have greyhound in them, Benson, surprisingly has very little.

They're are a lot of methods for calculating out there, accoding to some Jenny in the graph would of been a scratch dog (over 36lb) but she ended up 28lb.

The best way to know is watching the weight gain once they're weaned and how quickly this weight gain increases. Heavyweights tend to be big round ganneting balls of fluff at 9 weeks so there are clues.

As you can see, if you put Silas on the graph at 9 weeks, he isn't out of range for a pup that age so I wouldn't worry. What will be, will be but I doubt he'll be teeny.

I see what you mean - the graph shows all sorts of trajectories and blips in the curve. And as you say you've had a couple at his current weight who went on to gain faster than others. As you say, the pot luck aspect of it's part of the fun of watching them grow up! He's grown a lot (almost a kilo if my scales are to be believed) even in the week and a half we've had him so things seem to be back on track for not being mistaken for an Italian greyhound!

thought I'd better try this -

so at 12 weeks double their weight and add 1lb?????

Think my new pup may end up smaller than my two whippets - interesting to find out.
