Hi,

My puppy was black with a white patch when we got him, but over the last few weeks it has started to change to a reddy brown around his neck and shoulders. It's really noticable in the daylight, also he has reddy brown fur around his eyes. Is it possible that he is changing from black to brown permanently? im not upset by it just interested to know.

Thanks xx

Hello. You don't say what breed your puppy is, knowing that would help us answer your question. If a pedigree whippet as opposed to a non ped, well no it won't be a permanent change ... you don't really get brown whippets, but a slight copper tinge to the black in the areas you describe is not uncommon. My black and white whippet is 16 months old and for the last 5 months we have noticed lighter fur coming through as you describe - much more noticeable in sunlight. Roscoe's lighter fur is actually fawn when you look at it but shows up as light brown along the sides of his neck, shoulders, chest sides and a bit at the top of his back legs. His Mum was fawn and his Dad black so it is not too surprising :) On his head, back and down his legs is still jet black.

Hi Esty and TMC,

His mother was a full whippet and the owner paid for a pure whippet to mate with her, we originally bought his sister from her as a full whippet, but noticed that she seemed to be cross breed, the owner thinks her children may have let the mother out while she wasn't there and so it's possible that she was mated with a border collie aswell, that is the only other dog she could have mated with. The reason im explaining all this is as I really don't know whether the boy is a pedigree whippet or not, he does look more whippet and he is alot smaller, he also has more of a whippet tempermant. His mother was red and father was fawn and white, or poss black and white if he's mixed with the border collie  .

Tmc: It is like a dark copper colour as you mentioned.

Thankyou both for your advice and I hope I haven't confused you too much!!

I have always found that black dogs, cats and horses tend to go a bit coppery coloured before they moult and get their nice new summer coat.

It may well just be a seasonal change

did they register the litter with the kennel club? and give you paper work? i hope they didnt if they are not 100% sure of the sire, they should of DNA'd the puppies...i hope you didnt pay pedigree prices for what souns like a litter of cross breeds!

From what the OP is saying. they don't think their dog is pedigree!!!!!!!!!! So I doubt if it is registered.

Hi Bertha,

No they didn't come with papers and so weren't registered, the owners whippet was not kc registered but the male dog that she paid to mate with the mother was a registered whippet. I think i've been misunderstood, what I meant was even though the mother wasn't registered she was a full whippet, im aware but may be wrong, that 2 dogs can mate with a female and result in the litter being fathered by both as the mother has seperate eggs that can be fertilised.

Im not a sighthound expert, im only a learner and just looking for advice and guidance. I love my dogs and whatever they are is irrelevant to me, I love them regardless. I am interested in whippets and want to learn from you all what I can.

xx :)

An unregistered "full" whippet is more often than not a non ped whippet, non ped because somewhere in the mix is a bit of something else, even if it is some generations back. And it's that bit of something else that can cause anomalies. If the dam of your pup was a full whippet do you know who her dam and sire were?

:) Hi TMC,

Thank you for explaining it to me, as I said im only learning and so grateful for any advice. I don't know who the dam and sire are of the mother, I stay in regular contact with the owner so I could find out, she has been very honest with anything i've asked her.

We did do alot of research into whippets before we bought one from her, but of course there is still things I don't know about and im trying to learn as much as I can, that's why it's nice to come on here and talk to people like you and the others who know what they are talking about! :)

Thanks again xx
