My dog stepped on something (probably a broken glass bottle) and was cut badly, two ligaments cut through. They are stitched and he's wearing a splint. But the ligaments are shortened now and although we hope they will knit, it looks like he is going to be deformed and handicapped (one front foot and ankle/pastern look flattened out). He's an exuberant 4 year old who loves to run. How hard is it to deal long-term with a young invalid who can't be allowed to run as he wants to? (Maybe I feel it worse than he does???)

Even now, 5 days after the accident, I've heard my dog jumping on the door when I took the other dogs out. That is not good for his injury so I went back inside to put Jet-Sam in his crate.

IT'S VERY HARD ,HAD A LURCHER INJURED AT A RACE MEETING,HE WILL NEVER RACE AGAIN,TOOK HIM NEARLY TWO YEARS,TO BE ABLE TO PUT HIS HIND LEG TO THE GROUND,HE WOULD ONLY WANT TO HOP AROUND ON THREE LEGS,TO SCARED TO USE THE INJURED ONE.CAGED HIM FOR A WHILE SO HE WOULD'NT JUMP AROUND IN THE EARLY STAGES,SO IT WOULD HEAL.SENDING GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR DOG.FROM LADY P :luck: :luck: :luck:

Good luck for a satisfactory outcome. Thankfully I have no experience of such injuries but what you and others demonstrate to me is how easy it can be to sustain serious injury and how those who have not been directly affected similarly, can count themselves very lucky. All the best to your dog :luck:

Macha. What did the vet do with the ligiment's?Did they stitch,or wire them.Or like you've said, are they just being left to see if they knit together.Should phone one of the greyhound vet's,if you need any sound advice. ...Billy... PS.If you ring Lifford track, they will tell you when the vet will be there.

they stitched the ligaments but I don't think they used wire? I was told that there is a danger that the ligaments won't knit. But I see now that even if they do he doesn't hold the paw properly (because now his ligaments are too short) so he'll be left with an awful limp. It's already a week since the injury took place (as lamping man says, so easily, the dog wasn't even running). I do think I should take him elsewhere for further surgery IF feasible.
