Hi all, so Bailey my cross lab springer is coming to the end of her season, she is 11 years old and I’m having anxiety about pyometra, I wished I had had her spayed when she was younger but I didn’t like the thought of her being put out. Anyway can anyone help relax my mind by telling me if pyometra is as common as vets tell you. She’s showing no signs at the moment but I’m in a constant state of anxiety. Also she has a lot of lipomas on her and I’ve even started to worry about those. I think it’s because she is getting older and it panics me to think of losing her. Anyway any advice would be appreciated.

I have had entire female dogs since I was 17 ( I am 74 now) and my parents had entire females before that.
My vets have never mentioned about spaying and have never tried to persuade me to spay any of my 19 dogs over many years.
However I would always spay if there were any life affecting emergencies related to reproductive parts!

A long time ago I had a bitch spayed (I thought I was doing the right thing) and she became incontinent. Nobody even bothered to tell me it was a risk. Since then (40 years ish) I have never had a bitch spayed. Never a pyometra. Had wonderful holistic vet over that time who assured me pyo was a lot less common than we are led to believe BUT he is a holistic vet and so sought out by people who do that bit extra to keep their animals healthy, such as raw feeding and proper exercise. Doesn't mean it doesn't happen, doesn't mean it isn't serious, but does add balance. All my bitches except the last one had one litter each.

Have been through this after covid ,after blood in urine was diagnosed with pyometra Vets were awesome performed emergency op and spay she's now 12 and outworks most dog on shoot days
