er  can't say for sure but i will ask for you tomorrow

even if the computers can't make it out (though i think they can) there are still posties who can read even if centred :D

Hey-I'd given up hope

I'm sure posties can read it centred-lol

Only reason I'm asking is i've done all my christmas card addresses on labels to save time, but just as i'd got them to fit and printed them off I realised I hadn't actually set them correctly-(Post Office wise)

Karen

P.S

Wish i was a postie-probably not a great time to be one right now with all the change but what a cracking job-for fresh air and fitness eh?

I did a postal proceedure session several years back, as part of my job. I would imagine that the technology used in Australia would apply to the UK.

Letters go through some sort of scanning system. The computer can dectect most types of handwritting. What it is looking for is lower case on the name and street address, and upper case on the city, state (Aus), post/zip code etc. The prefered location for the address is in the centre of the envelop. The computer is programmed to ignore the little return addresses at the top of some envelopes. Also do not use puncuation such as comma's and fullstops

Whether or not it is centred or left margined should not matter, but it would be better at the left margin. All that happens if the computer can not compute the address, the letter is diverted down a different shoot, and is then hand sorted.

Example for Australia
