Howdy Judges (and experienced breeders)

I've noticed that some judges use the width of their hand to measure the distance between a Whippet's hips and the base of its tail.

Could someone please tell me what this measurement signifies?

I've experienced it where the judges will use there hands to measure from the bottom of the feet to the shoulders but not hands measuring croup area??? Do get the odd ones, measure the tail by pulling it thru the back & up to the hip... daft practices both of thes IMO, tells me they are not confident judging the breed

Never heard of that in the UK. Tail measuring is common place here, just to check the tail is long enough. I have never seen any judge measure any part of a whippet apart from the tail!!!!!!

It has nothing to do with lack of confidence either.

Yes, the other way of measuring the tail, is to run it down the leg, so it goes past the hock. A bit more slick in my opinion. I have seen this done by many an experienced judge, as it's done for a reason.

The UK breed standard says that the tail should reach at least to the hock so there is no harm in checking!!

Yes so what is the point of bringing the tail through the legs and up to the hip?? when is more correct to just run the tail down the leg??

As a judge and having presented breed lectures to aspiring Hound judges here in Oz, I've never encountered a judge placing a hand between the hip and tail base. I can only suggest that when you encounter something like this, speak to the judge at the conclusion of judging.

Many judges will measure sighthound tails by bringing the tail between the legs and up to the hip and has been an accepted method for many years. Judges measure Saluki tails similarly. Neither method is better than the other nor is one incorrect. I personally find that bringing the tail down to the hock joint is sufficient but each to their own. :)

...does anyone sell tail extentions??
LOL  That would be interesting, tail extensions  Yes, more typical for judges to run the tail to the hock down under, don't recall in my 20yrs in the breed that I have seen a whippet with a short tail.

I've got one! If you use her little twist of hair at the end of her tail it almost reaches her hock!!!

:p So is it hair extensions you would use as oppossed to tail extensions

There are some whippets with tails a little on the short side, thankfully they are few and far between!

crazy that tails are measured yet there is a desirable height in the KC standard yet judges fail to bother with that??

At the SYWC Whippet Judge's seminar I attended a few years back we were told that the 'ideal' proportions for the length of the whippet from fromt of chest to tail was 2/3 to 1/3 - with the chest portion being 2/3 and behind the chest to rear being 1/3, so perhaps they were just doing a visual 'measurement' of that proportion rather than a literal measure?

Just a thought.

The mystery deepens. :b

Interestingly, the Swedish judge that judged the NSW Whippet Specialty did it as well.

I'll ask the next judge who does it after the ring has completed. :)

I've had plenty of judges extend Howie's tail and curve up to his hip. With Howie that's no problem.. its up the front where the action is. Greet him and he wants to kiss you. :b

Swedish judges are trained to measure the croup (hips to tail) as quite a few dogs are short there. Bringing the tail through is probably more reliable for length than just to the hock because you then have to consider how hihg/low the hocks are.

Thanks Gay, I'd say that's what they're doing. :)
