Just a quick question. Do you think that there is notenough awareness made concerning dog theft and how much it appears to be happening now? Do you think more could be done to make owners aware of dog theft and give them advice on what to beware of?

Yes you are right, people really are not aware of the risk of dog theft. When walking my dog and my clients dogs I am aware of everyone near the dogs and of anyone looking suspicious. We had an incident where Grace(my whippy) was grabbed but she bit him and I threatened him with a big stick  so he let go,luckily. I still see dogs tied up outside shops or left unnatended so I try and advise the owners of the dangers. But more advertising needs to be done.

More probably does need to be done to increase awareness. However, i've noticed a big surge in promoting it recently (for example, there was a stand at crufts and publicity around theft of Lionel Blairs dog on TV etc)

i don't tend to worry about Audrey coz she's so nervous of people, they'd never get close enough to grab her.....and i'd LOVE to see them try to out run her!

Digit's a different matter - he thinks all people are friends (or at least, could have biscuits in their pockets!) and grabbing his collar would be a doddle.

I'd never leave either tied up anywhere but have seen plenty who do. People i talk to seem well aware of the risks of having a 'fighting' type dog stolen - but not other breeds.

i still can't get over what everyone was saying a bit ago about having to have DNA evidence to prove a dog is yours - that a microchip or tattoo isn't enough. it feels like when they're deciding what to do with the scrotes that steal dogs, they class them as property and sentence accordingly

But if my property is recovered by the poilice, a post code in one of those uv pens is enough to prove it's mine - (i don't need a core sample from my TV stored in a lab somewhere!)............but somehow more is needed for my dog!

Either Digit is my property or not - seems like they want it both ways (whichever disadvantages ME!)

im aware and i will die first before sumone gets my dogs but its the police im worried about they r not that interested in stolen dogs

very true :( dog theft is not a priority with police :( i hope recent awareness helps stop theft, but still so many people dont realise how far thieves would go to get to a dog they want :( they dont just get snatched when out for a walk. these monsters will enter your garden, break into your house....

I would just like to point out police response to dog theft. Dogs, in the eyes of the law are a possession, the same as a TV or diamond ring for example. If your house gets broken into and your dog stolen, it will be investigated as a burglary dwelling. If your car gets broken into, a theft from vehicle etc etc.

Poor Rosie who was stolen at knife point and ended up in a stream - that is being investigated by CID as a robbery.

These are facts. You don't need to tell me that dogs mean more than normal possession - i know, i love and own them. However, this is the realistic scope of investigation.

I think more should be done to make people aware of dog theft.

I'm always on the look out when I'm walking my girls...I'd kill anyone who try to get them off me.

Mind you its not just dog theift that is going on around here. On Saturday i was walking Zeb in the park when he found a tesco bag with food in it. Yes you all know what whippets and food is like he eat 2 scotch eggs, the teenager shouted to me that if he ever saw that dog again he would stab in. In the afternoon i was walking past anther park, when a teenage girl shouted to her friends that she hated that dog because he was a racing dog. :(

1. Zeb has never raced :- "

2. She has never even meet Zeb :- "

One of the boys that was with her then shouted to her to get his ball (pointing to a football) when she asked him why he said to hit that dog with, He told her that he would hit him because she hated him.

i do think that more needs to be done to stop theift and also to teech these kids that its wrong, im only glad that my 7 year old and 9 year old were not with me.

Thats disgusting it makes my blood boil when I hear things like that

A bloke that lives over the road from me, said if Inca went near him, he'd hit her with a 4 iron...I told him if he went near her I'd    kill him...

sum kids and i say sum r really scum 2day and i hate them, if ur dog growls or bites then the police will not let up wow its like a different kettle of fish

I didn't realise how common dog theft was until a dog i know was stolen.

You only have to look at DogLost.co.uk to find out how common it is, stealing very young puppies, designer dogs and very much loved pets it's heartbreaking for the owners and the dogs.

If you read any page on this site you will have your eyes opened. It will also make you more aware of how secure your dog is, it makes you think.

It is also very sad :(
