I'm just about ready to start my boy in straight races. We alredy make sure he gets LOTS of running time off leash in a secure area, but what else should I do to make sure he is in shape? Also, what prep do you do on the actuall race day in regards to warming up and cooling down?

We rub our dogs down with trainer choice about an hour before racing. Other use a different rub :- " .

John see's to the pre-race rub down and stretching :D

A race before we let them see the dogs trapping, to kinda wake them up, with Ricky he was carried to the traps with his muzzle on and put right into the traps (no pre-race look for him, he's nuts).

After the race, John walks them away from the track and then checked over :D

Im sure other's will say what they do and it will be different from us

Thanks for the reply Susan!

What kinds of stretches do you go through? I have worked with horses and I know that they have to be warmed up (usually some ground work at the trot and mabey a small fence or two) and they need to be cooled out after (walked for a bit untill their breathing is no longer faster than normal). I was just wondering if the whippies need simalar routiens. Mabey a stupid question but I've never raced a dog before.

If I'm going down the country then I rub my dogs down before I go. Then when I get there I rub down again ( I know what I feel like after a long jurney) I also stretch then to. when the programs come out I rub down again, put racing jackets on ect. After a race I rub down again then walk around to let the dog cool down I never just put them back in the cages straight away. When they cooled down I give a small drink. :luck: with your dog.
