My beautiful Penny injured herself yesterday at the races. It looks like she's pulled or torn muscles in her groin area. I thought there's alot of knowledgable people here, hopefully someone knows how I should treat this.

She has bruising on both sides, it's just hard to see through her fur.

it's hard to tell from a picture, but it doesnt look to serious.

a weeks resat and a bit of arnica should see her ok with no lasting effects.

but if your in any doubt nip her the vets for a professional view.

It took me a while to decide which part of the dog I was looking at, then I decided it looks like the gracilis area, and I would suspect maybe a slightly torn muscle, but it doesn't look that bad. Might be worth a check at the vets, as she will need some rest if it's torn even slightly. I tend to wrap mine in cotton wool a bit when I suspect an injury, but I think it's best to be on the safe side. Hope she recovers soon. :luck: Good luck.

Thankyou to all who've answered here & by PM, well at least the verdict is consistent. Everyone who's seen the pic & Penny in the flesh says Gracilis.

She's quite bright this morning but cant jump, I wont let her if I can help it anyway. She's getting on in years so I think this probably signals the end of her racing career. As long as she can be a happy girl & have fun that's enough for me.

Oh no Linda, don't worry so much, her racing career will be fine. The treatment I was always told to give by Des Fegan (well respected greyhound vet) for gracilis tear is to ice pack for a few days, then massage with Iodised Oil twice daily, then hand slip her at 21 days, and then run her at 28 days. It is important that the scar tissue doesn't become tight, so the massage, and then free running at 21 days is important. A bad tear can affect the racing performance, but Penny's doesn't look that bad.

I have a whippet who tore both gracilis muscles in her back legs, and she went on to run out of skin as a veteran, and won two Veteran Crowns.

:luck: She will be fine
