2 friends had litters due over Christmas, one is the litter with the small puppy that I have already posted, the other was due to have a litter of Gordon Setter puppies - she was definitely in whelp at 6 weeks but no puupies arrived on 29/12 - she was taken to the vets on 30/12 and the puppies had been reabsorbed.

Why does this happen? Yola had been at home with her family all through and nothing unusual happened to frighten her. My friend is understanably upset, everything was ready, the whelping box and the puppy pen, a list of names....anyone here had a similar experience or can shed any light on why this happens?

IVE READ ABOUT IT LIKE MOST OF US PROBABLY HAVE BUT IN GENERAL IT SAYS DUE TO STRESS ETC BUT NONE OF THIS SEEMS TO APPLY IN THIS CASE DOES IT :(

ITS VERY UNUSUAL TO LOSE THE BABIES SO LATE THOUGH ?

ARE THEY SURE SHE WAS PREGNANT AT 6 WEEKS ? AS I WOULDNT HAVE THOUGHT THEY COULD BE RE ABSORBED AT THIS STAGE ?

IM SURE SOMEONE WILL BE ABLE TO SHED MORE LIGHT , POOR THING , ITS SUCH A SHAME :(

Many years ago we had a bitch that was in whelp (about 5 weeks) I had to help a freind move to Ireland so took the dogs with us unfortunatly she never produced pups after talking with the vet his opinion was that the stress of traveling probably caused her to absorb the pups?.

although talking to some they are of the opinion a bitch cannot do that without showing signs of i'llness?.

I don't know much about it but we did once have a pony that was 6 months in foal when her companion died he was 43 years old he had a heart attack one night . It soon became cear that the mare had reabsorbed the foal the vet said it was more than likely due to the stress of lossing her mate even though she had her yearling daughter with her

There are a number of causes of spontaneous abortion, if it's prior to 16 days then it is difficult to know whether they was aborted or whether the bitch failed to conceive in the first place.

Pregnancy further on from then can have spontaneous abortion for a number of reasons, both maternal and fetal. Fetal causes are usually due to abnormal development or early fetal death. Maternal causes can be from Brucella infection, Herpes infection, Uterine disease, Ovarian disease with resulting low progesterone levels and and pre-existing disease that leads to a bout of illness. So stress is not the only cause (although any of these conditions could be exascerbated by it due to stress affecting immunity)

A diagnosis can usually be made by a pathology examination of aborted, expelled foetuses or in cases of absorption, tests of the mother e.g. blood tests, swabs, hormone tests, biopsies etc.

Thanks so much, my friend has been blaming herself, thinking she must have done something wrong, I have printed out the article for her.

Are we talking abortion or reabsorbing the puppies?? There is a difference
