I have an 8 month old whippet who has been fine at returning when called up until recently. He has started haring off across the field when he sees another dog/person to play with them, whether they want to or not(!) and turns completely 'deaf' when I call him back. Has anyone got any suggestions how to tackle this?

My gypsy does the same, shes just too friendly by half ;)

we have started taking a frisbee out with us and she loves it, she gets a reward everytime she brings it back to us liver cooked in garlic (homemade) very smelly and tasty.

we also use a whistle, which has been a huge help, if it looks as though she is about to do a runner, i lay down on the grass and call her.......most of the time she comes over just to see what the hell i am doing..but it works...i do have some strange looks from people..but if it works, it works.

its a case of keeping her interested in YOU and not everyone else!

if that fails, you might need to get a traing lead and start from scratch!

this is working for us, but maybe other folk on here have some other suggestions for you

good luck :luck:

Thanks, I have tried turning and walking away and he does come running back when he realises I'm going in the opposite direction...WHEN he realises!! I'm going to walk him in a mo, had already bought a whistle and will try the lying down thing. Wish it hadn't been raining tho.... :(

I think it may be time to take a step back and re-train your re-call. My 10 month old is having the same problem lately. Up untill now he has been wonderfull with coming back but he seems to be forgetting what he's learned. No problem though. I just walk him on a long line now so when he decides to ignore me I can re-enforce my command using the long line. It seems most puppies seem to forget their training at this age but it never hurts to go over the basics once in a while to re-enforce a good response.

It sounds like he's hit the 'Kevin' stage - teenage awkwardness. I think a lot of dogs go through this at this sort of age.

I'd agree with FoxyDog, use a long lead and go back to basics with recall. Recall him as often as possible around the house and garden and reward with something REALLY good and OTT praise every single time. You need to brainwash him into hearing the command or whistle and knowing that this means something FANTASTIC is going to happen to the point where he responds without even thinking about it.
