Does anyone have any input/comments on reflective coats for keeping whippets cool in the sun?

I heard a substantial number of exhibitors at some recent shows left without exhibiting their dogs as the temperature in the ring rose too high for the dogs comfort.

We usually use soaked towels but have heard of reflective dog coats and would like to know more.

Is this a problem when racing?

this is the sort of thing I am thinking of ebay coat but for whippets

my friend has one for her greyhound she says its brill

I'm not sure about putting a layer on a hot dog  I think that shade and water are really effective...A mister spray would be a cheap alternative. I also think taht gazebos at the car boot and umbrellas in the ring would be a great idea. Umbrellas are portable and a cheap way of deflecting the sun

Ive got one for tigger, and i find it very usefull. i do believe it keeps them cooler

i remember being sat on the beach burnt to a crisp..covering up and putting my t shirt on brought immediate relief, so although it seems weird to add a layer on a hot day it really does help.

While im walking Tif and the others i stick my hand under her coat and compared to the others she really is much cooler.

she is the only one with a coat at present as she really does overheat quickly..the others tend to cope better :))

If you are buying coats Dawn, don't forget to get one with a removable furry lining to use in the winter (w00t)

Well, seems they work from anecdotes...Go for it

Hi Dawn

We've already chatted about this, but for the benefit of the question being on the board....

I bought some VERY reflective ones (made from the same reflective material as the crate covers and things you put over your car etc) from Venture Coats. I wasn't sure how well they would work.

At Paignton was the first time we used them and after they'd been on about 5 minutes the girls stopped panting and DID NOT PANT or overheat once for the rest of the day. They were either wearing the coats and outside the crate, or they were inside the crate (with reflective cover) and no coats.

I was EXTREMELY impressed with them! They worked well in the ring. I kept them on except when we were stacked and there was no panting or tongue hanging from either whippet.

So well worth it. (even if they do make 'em look like 'Space Dogs' or 'Cadbury's Choccie bars' as was stated at the show (w00t) )

I bought a refrective coat at Ppainton £9.00. , On the way home the sun was beating down on my arm and I fasterned it over my shoulder and it wotked a treat .

;)

I must add that the worst thing you can do to a hot dog is put a cold wet towel on its back (w00t) Dog s are not like horses and only sweat through their tonque and feet . if you put a cold wet towel on their backs they body will try to get the heat back up so in effect you are making the dog try to get warmer.

I always did it and pored cold water on my dogs when they had been racing and was given a severve blasting by someone who knew what they were on about and I could see his logic . Now I try to dip their feet in cold water and in fact the judge on thursday had a cold . wet towel on the table for the dogs to stand on :D

So please , no more wet towels , you are doing more harm than good .

Thats really interesting. I have often used a wet towel. I'll dip their feet next time.
