We have rehomed a greyhound who is quite insecure but is improving at home. The problem we have is that we are gardeners by profession and want to be able to take Kipling to work with us in various gardens. He won't settle and follows us around and is obviously stressed when he sees us go through a gate. He's quite happy to sit in the truck but he won't be able to do this as the weather gets hotter.

Can anyone give us some training tips on how to make him feel more secure and relaxed when he's with us at work.

He's about 3. We've had him for about 3 weeks.

It's early days. Can you get one of the stakes that go in the ground and tether him in the gardens you are working in? Two things about these though, first the line should be plastic coated so it stays quite stiff, and therefore can't loop round his neck and choke him; second they should be attached to a harness and not a collar in case he runs and doesn't realise he is reaching the end of its length which can damage his trachea.

If you don't want him in the gardens, you can get something that locks the tailgate of a vehicle in the open position. It's like a rigid bar maybe 3 feet long? If he is crated with the crate positioned to prevent anyone getting past and with the tailgate locked open with the bar, he wouldn't overheat and still be secure. Sorry if I haven't explained that well.
