Louis (Black Labrador) is just 12m old (previously had 2 homes) and has been with us 5 weeks. He's settling in nicely and attending local obedience classes. BUT....we're really struggling to walk him!! He is strong and constantly drags, there is no slack at all. Hubby uses a chokechain and I use a Doghalter (we agreed to disagree). I know we're doing something wrong but have no idea what? We hired a private trainer for 2 lessons who he immediately obeyed and walked obediently to heel, then did the same with us. Sadly, back home he reverted to dragging again. I am now paying to hire a small fenced off field, just so that I can exercise him properly at least once a week. This is our third dog and second rescue but I'm really stumped, what are we doing wrong?
We are still working on his outdoors recall and non existing social skills. Most walks are just a series of dragging with some high jumping and wriggling/stalling, he is really affected by different noises/smells/distractions. This is now affecting our lives as, because of his dragging and jumping we can't go anywhere ...AT ALL.
Otherwise, he has a lovely nature, is non aggressive or possessive, good with children and is learning to play :- )
