Hi.

I'm interested to know if there is a cure/solution (I doubt it).

I have 3 whippets (13month - 11 month - 6 month). Last week when I was at work, my daughter took them for a walk. Upon her return, the youngest pup needed vets treatment for a split ear. My daughter had no idea how she split it.

3 days later, I was walking the dogs - all off lead and I noticed that they like to run around like idiots, and they just seem to run straight into each other. They cannot run without trying to tug onto each others necks. So much so, that the male dog run straight into the young pup again, and winded her.

I have now taken to walking the dogs, letting each dog off the lead in turn. But they have no interest in running up a sweat without each other as competition.

I also want to race the dogs (fun only), but I don’t want a dog that will not run after the hare, just the leading dogs neck..!!!

Does anyone have any suggestion ? ? ?

Would a muzzle help ?

Is it just young age ?

I never run more than 2 dogs at a time,my lurcher came out of the bushes with her kennel mate ,with a half an ear hanging off, don't know if it was the other lurcher, caught her with his teeth or she did it on wire. Most dogs scruff each other around the neck when playing. They are all still very young. If you want to race the dogs ,they have to wear a muzzle for their own safety, and other dogs that are racing.when we train the younger dogs to wear muzzles,we take time over this, only using plastic muzzles and playing with them with a bit of rag or fur on the end of a piece of thick string, hope this helps you.Somerset Lurchers,Lady P

Hi,firstly,i wouldn't run a 6 month old puppy with 2 other young adults, when they're obviously as giddy as this. It's just an accident waiting to happen,as you've unfortunately found out

I have to be careful with some of mine when i first let them off lead,so i tend to let them off one at a time,or in a 'safe' pair, until they've calmed down a bit!

Murphy in particular is an absolute nutter,& if i'm not careful,he's either swinging off someones neck,or grabbing a back leg in his exuberance.I only let him off with Poppy or Flyn,as he wouldn't dare do that to either of them :- "

I'm sure they'll calm down a bit as they grow up,but in the meantime,i say just be careful & use a bit of common sense

Thanks for the replies.

They have now been out about 5 times under the new regulation of 1 dog off the lead at a time. A much better walk is had by all.

I do give the 2 bitches a run together towards the end of the walk, but by this time they are tired, and play together in a much slower manner. (when I say run, I don’t mean race).

Walking is now becoming a pleasure again – and I think the lead walking is also paying dividends with obedience.

They are not bad dogs by any means – just very playful & easily over excitable….

Again – BIG thanks for the advice.

I tend let let one off at a time too until they calm down

Mine four have always run together like loonies 2,3,and 4 years old, from the start too, most of the time if the get a cut or a knock its off a branch ect not each other.

I think it is normal for the neck tugging mine do it all the time BUT when they are chasing the lure they don't even look at each they are totally focussed on it and they have raced together many times

Thats probably why they are tough as old boots (w00t)

One of mine bumped into the other one and broke his leg :( and another time one turned the other one over and fractured his skull  so it definately pays to be carefull

I also only let two of my three hounds loose at a time, because they will tumble and nip each other as you and others have described. If there are other dogs about, I either have all mine on lead or let just one free.

The two adults have raced and they do not interfere with the other dogs while the race is in progress; they are so focussed on the lure. I think it is important to give dogs practice chasing a lure on their own without other dogs distracting them; once they are keen on the lure you probably won't have a problem with them at races.

Good advice here!

My lot mad as hatters (w00t) Will let whippets run together only 2 of them but scarlett barges into them like a tank  tend to let them off one by one.

Leo our 14 year old Bichon just does his business and heads for home.Alfie (long haired chihuahua trogg :- " ) trys to keep up and would get flattened plus would steam up to any dog to take them on if the came near his pack lol.He thinks he is top dog

Alfie only likes Cindy a stunning westie. He doesnt realise he so small  so he stays on extendable lead. The whippets may mistake him as lure bait anyway

As most have said common sense is the key
