Hi All,

I Know this topic is not dog related but...... It is my uncle's 40th birthday next week and as a surprise my aunt is going to get him a satellite navigation system for his birthday, he is ALWAYS getting lost! She went into Halfords today and nearly collapsed with shock at the price of them  Do any of you have them and if so do you have any feedback on them? She said she looked at TomTom and Navman?

Hi Kirsty

I bought myself the tom tom as an xmas pressie and love it, the best deal was online I managed to get around £60 of it by looking for promotional codes on a search engine i.e dixons promotional code or currys.

I think woolworths is doing a deal on navman.

I prefer the sats that are not personal organisers. I like the fact that the tom tom will fit in my pocket and also I can do the route in the house before setting off.

Hi Siobhan,

Thanks for the info

What model of Tom Tom do you have? I think she was looking at the Go 300 and 500 if that makes any sense? She was also looking at the Navman icn520.

Hi Kirsty,my hubby bought a Navman last year.On the plus side they will get you to where ever you want to go.Hubby has his own buisiness and because he travels alot to new places he swears by it.On the negative side, like computers they rely on the input from us.The voice on my hubbys Navman is female, and at times he reackons it is worse than me for talking. But from my point of view I hate it.I could argue with it all day.Maybe thats because I don't 100% trust it,although I must admit it hasn't failed yet.One thing I would advise is that your Uncle makes sure that he programes in which type of road(Motorway,A roads or minor roads)he mainly wants to use every time he uses it,or he could end up going miles out of his way to reach his destination.Good luck :D Karen

My hubby bought a TomTom 300 last year & loves it (he calls it "Sexy Suzy") but then again he's useless with a map. It always gets him to wherever he wants to go so can't really fault it. However I can't stand the thing, on the odd occasion that I've used it I've ended up getting annoyed. Last summer it took me down a really narrow road instead of sticking to the main road, probably would have been o.k. but my 2 friends were following me.......with caravans  Since then I've stuck to a road atlas.

Hi Karen,

Thanks for that. I think my aunt is under the impression it just chooses the shortest route  I will tell her the bit about choosing roads, e.g motorways, A roads or minor. I wonder if the same would apply to the Tom Tom. I think to be quite honest, though she is buying it for his birthday she'll probably end up using it more than him! I wish I could afford one myself :- "

The Garmin Quest is pretty good. I was travelling back from Germany just after Christmas, in the car, and it worked brilliantly. Put the map away eventually..and completely trusted it to get us to a small village just outside of Calais. Not one of the cheaper ones though I don't think. :- " (it's not mine btw...so i don't know much about it except it worked really well).

Hi Kirsy I have the tom tom 700 because of the good deal i got on it and it comes with the ac adapter which is £25 the other two don't have it in the box. Mine is europe as well so depends if your uncle travels abroad.

I have major problems with getting lost and don't know my left and right (dyslesic) so this has given me a new lease of life

Hi again, you can program them to do the shortest route or the quickest route, none motorways etc

Thanks Siobhan and everyone,

Not sure if he'd want it for Europe or just the Uk. Maybe just the Uk. I will pass all that info on.

Thanks very much

Kirsty

If he does get one make sure when he gets out of the car he removes the system, including the mark on the windscrean, as people are breaking into cars to get them.

They see the ring on the window and think they may have put the system in the glove box or something..

We have just done /well are doing an operation in Bristol and you would be surprised at the stuff people leave on display in their cars....

Bags, coats, laptops, navigation systems, CD players...totally mad.

Ok public warning over :p

Hi,

My aunt has asked me to pass on her thanks to everyone for their help in making her decide what to get. She finally got one today from Halfords. TomTom One she ended up getting. She said it has all that he needed.
