Good evening everyone. Some advice please if you would. The great Saucey Madam has come into season. My problem might be with the boy ZORRO, her pup who is 25 weeks old. This isn't meant to be a daft question so I hope it will not be percieved as such but will they be alright to remain together or will they at some stage of the cycle need to be separated? Better safe than sorry, that is why I ask.

Always taking precautions, the non controversial

Lampingman :D

I would seperate them now. Save the poor little fella a lot of stress

Tegan came in season 12 days ago and I seperated her from her son who is 5 mths just to be on the safe side The randy little beggar now tries to mount his sisters instead although they both chase him of

Depends on the dog  but Inca was ok with her son when she came in when little Eric was only 5 months old .......We just kept them seperate when we wern't there ......

When you say separate are we talking a)crate b) crate in separate room c)kennels or visit to grandma's? (Just thinking ahead about the problems of introducing a bitch puppy. Ours got a whiff of something on his walk last night and was awake, whining and bedscratching for hours  )

A 5 month old pup is more than capable of mating a bitch,so i should just be VERY careful.

Thanks everyone for your comments. Looks like Zorro will be in bed with us for the time being. I couldn't want for better company. Apart from my wife of course. ( Better put that in!! )

Bye for now

LOL as a Whippet, I guess Zorro's gutted about sharing your bed :D

Visit to granma would be the easiest option. Other way, I would have always one in a crate, in the guest room, and the other with me. Most of the time i would leave the boy at home and take the bitch in a car with me wherever I'd need to go (provided it was not too hot weather ,and/or if I knew I can park under cover). Or I would take the dog and leave her, but I would always leave her in the house in a crate - to make sure some stray dog did not find her. I did not find it particulary dificult, my dogs generally settled into the routine. The 3 weeks go fast, and Whippets do not come in season as often as other breeds. I cannot say I found it a great drama.

Thanks Lida. I might just try the crate. I have a large one that I think the wife can fit in leaving the bed for me and Zorro. Good deal!
