Any tips on a calming a dog scared of wind

Is it the noise of wind? Or of being out in the wind? Could you describe what your dog is doing and when.

If it is the noise of wind then it may be linked to a fear of thunder storms. Some dogs who suffer from a fear of thunder will generalise the fear to include wind and rain as they often accompany thunder.

Desensitisation is generally used in these cases. Making the feared stimulus as low level as possible and encouraging the dog to either relax or to do something so enjoyable that they decide to put the fear to one side.

This could be food or cuddles or games. Once the noise of wind is paired with something really enjoyable the dog changes its mind about it.

It helps if the people in the house behave in a calm relaxed manner and make no fuss about the dog's fear. Allow the dog to retreat to any safe haven of its choice. Turn up the radio or tv. Close the curtains. The dog will still be able to hear the wind but it may not be so scary. The calmer the dog the more it is able to learn.

Some dogs respond well to Adaptil. It is a plug in diffuser that contains the pheromones excreted by a lactating bitch. This makes some dogs feel secure. Another one to try is a "thundershirt". They can be bought under that name or you can make one out of a t shirt that fits snuggly on your dog.

There are cd's with recorded noises on them to help with noise phobia but I am not sure they include just wind. They do have thunder storms on them. Sounds Scary is one of them. The idea is to play the cd at such a low level that the dog does not react in a fearful way. This means that he becomes desensitised to that volume. Gradually increase the volume, always keeping it within the tolerance level of the dog. Move the speakers around to replicate noises coming from all directions.
