Ive noticed over the last couple of weeks a change in temperament in my whippet bitch, from once a nice little docile dog to now becoming a vicious little get with my 7 yr old retriever bitch, for no apparent reason i can see other than jealousy she will give my retriever a good thrashing like she did this morning the poor bugger was whimpering i couldnt get to em fast enough to seperate em, her ear was torn and blood all over her ear, i had to bathe it and stop the flow with superglue, and im annoyed to say the least at seeing my friend of 7 yrs treated this way, i wont tolerate much more of it no matter what the consequencies

Is she due in season Keith?

I was going to ask that too. She may be challenging your older girl for Alpha bitch role, it it continues, and it isn't just a blip in the hormones, it may be worth either reading up on behaviour and how to manage challenges such as this, or consulting a behaviourist. There are loads of books you can consult, and alot of them have very good suggestions on how to deal with all sorts of behaviour issues. It is a matter of finding one which you have faith in and works for you. I like Jan Fennell, as do a few others on here, she makes perfect sense to me, and has an easy to follow step by step approach. Her ideas and observations are based on wolf pack behaviour in the wild. Hope you manage to get the problem sorted :luck:

Hope you get it sorted midlanderkeith :luck: :luck: :luck:

Poor Retriever :( I had a retriever as my first dog and she was so gentle and good natured I'm not surprised you are upset at her being attacked. Maybe if you spay your whippet it will reduce the aggression or try some Evening Primrose oil first as that might soothe her if she's getting PMT?

Sorry to read this Keith. It's a horrible situation to be in I know this because I had warring bitches for about 3 years here. Hopefully she's just having a hormonal moment and she'll settle down quickly.

I can appreciate that it's not nice seeing your old girl treated in this way but at least she's not fighting back. That's when you have very serious problems. See if you can catch the flash point which is causing the whippet to act like this.

Once you've worked out what is causing it to happen then you can at least try to modify things so it doesn't happen again. Sounds like if your other dog isn't fighting back then you'll just have to accept that the whippet is top and the oldie is second and reinforce that.

There is summat very sad about seeing a once top dog retiring gently. But much worse if they don't want to go and they get killed or seriously injured.

I'd also check 'em both out and make sure that neither of them is ill in anyway.

Thank you for that Barbara, and word for word makes sense to me, to look at a whippet, well mine anyway butter wouldnt melt, but she can be real nasty, but ive spent most of the afternoon trying to catch the flashpoint as you put it, and without rambling on i think im on top of it, i like to get into my dogs mind if i can, sally is good enough for jill to cuddle up to, and allowed jill my whippy to attempt suckle when i first brought her home aged 8 weeks  my dogs are my hobby, i will sort em out, let me put sallys food down, and she will alow jill to share, put jills food down, all hells let loose if sally goes near, but it wasnt food orientated this morning

Hope it sorts its self out soon Keith..... :huggles: we sometimes have problems with our two bitches :( Macey(whippet) gets stroppy with my fell terrier, and although Bracken (terrier) trys very hard to ignore her & look away but ocationally they have a set to :( we have to be on our guard mainly in the mornings when macey has just got out of my daughters bed :huggles:

:- " comes downstairs &heads straight for bracken ,shes a little b****r sometimes :huggles:

hope this sorts itself out Keith, can't add any expert opinion, must be an awful thing to see your first girl getting picked on

:luck:

How heartbreaking for you.

You may recall I had Billie the whippet here, she started to attack Tiny my yorkie, it wasn't nice and we tried everything to get control of the situation and asked for help on K9 (which we receive in abundance - thanks to all)

Unfortunately Billie went back to her previous owner as things came to a head and she flew at Tiny and shook her by the neck. Luckily for her, Tiny was OK.

Can't offer any "words of wisdom" but I really hope things settle down for you.

Good luck.

Annette

hope you get this sorted keith which to be honest i think you will, it cant be at all nice for anyone :( good luck :luck:
