The answer to this question depends on breed. Some breeds do well with same sexes. Some do well with opposites. If you think you would be going for a male I would have your bitch spayed asap (unless you're getting an older already altered male). Male pups can produce pups from as soon as they are big enough to perform the deed, so you don't want an accident because you waited.
Edit to add that if she's had a season recently vets prefer to do the spay about 3 months after/before season when the uterus is at rest.
