So I am looking at re-homing a rescue dog. The dog I have met is a rot tie/Akita cross. Absolutely beautiful dog. Initial meetings all went well and took my children (2&6) and there seemed to be no problems. Or signs of problems. She is coming for a trial next week, and want to make it as normal as possible for her, so will be going into work. But what I would like to know is what I can do to to make the separation easier, to make things like chewing less of a risk for eg. TIA xx

It will depend, hugely, on the confidence of the dog. Some dogs are fine to be left others hate it. If she is used to being left then the main thing will be that she has settled enough in her new home to relax when you go out. I would think that this will take a week or two.

While she is settling in you could try leaving her in the other room occasionally to see how she copes. Be very cool about everything and just pop in and out as though it happens all the time. Try not to respond to whining and try not to let her keep following you or resting too close to you. Rescue dogs cope best if they are on a very cool regime during the first couple of weeks. If they get over fussed and petted they get anxious when left alone. She needs to find her feet on her own and in her own time.
