Hello all, I am a new whippet owner (well since Sunday anyways) and am seeking some help from more experienced whippet types.......! I have already had some help from a few people on this site, thanks everyone for this!

My puppy (Pimms) arrived on Sunday and is a real sweetie :D , the only problem we are having is settling her on her own. She is 11 weeks and will get her first jab this weekend so not too long before she can get out and about exploring the world on her lead!

I had tried to keep her in our kitchen at night, for she howled for about 3 hours on end and then finally went to sleep. Then she got up really early (5am) and started howling again. I finally gave up and bought her a cage and last night she slept in this perfectly all night in my bedroom with me.

I dont mind her sleeping with me at the moment if it helps her settle, I was planning to move the cage further and further away from me, to door, then to hall, then back to kitchen eventually. This has been reccommended by a few different people. I want her to settle on her own in the end, both at nights and also during the day as I will have to leave her for a while sometimes.

When I can take her to work with me she can stay in the car, again a problem as she howls and howls and is upsetting people at my work.

How can I make things a bit easier for her to settle? She will have to get used to it as I work full time. If she settles in the car then she neednt be on her own for any more then an hour at a time, and she will also get loads of walks this way too.

Apart from the howling she is great fun, she loves life and is always very waggy and sweet! :huggles:

Thanks everyone!

Hi Gemma and welcome to k9, seems you"ve already found a way to keep her quiet at night and get some sleep, :sweating: id carry on with this and as you say move the cage further away untill she hopefully settles in the kitchen this may well take weeks though so be prepared, you also mention taking her to work and leaving her in your car this seems like a bad idea to me as with the weather getting hotter cars can get very hot and the poor puppy could suffer, just my own opinion though, have you any pics of Pimms.

Hi Gemma, I take it she won't be left in the car for long periods as it would get very hot in the summer. Could you take her crate to work with you and pop her in that for short periods. Putting the crate in your bedroom at night is a good idea. everything is very strange and new for her at the moment.

Hi Gemma welcome to k9 and congratulations on getting Pimms  , it

seems like you have solved the night time problems.

During the day though it isn't a good idea to keep her in the car, could you get a relative to have her during the day. Just a thought,

Good luck :luck:

Hi and welcome to K9.

Please remember that your puppy is only 11 weeks old, and that everything is strange. I'd leave her cage in your bedroom over night for a few weeks before you try to move her back towards the kitchen. She is only a baby, ofcourse she is going to protest if you leave her alone, she misses you. Have you thought about this from her point of view? If she is alone all night and most of the day while you are at work she could be very lonely and bored. She's not going to spend much time with you :( Sorry to be so blunt and I apologise if I have misunderstood the situation.

I dont think it's a good idea at all to leave her in the car - can't you take her & a crate into work with you, or have someone look after her while you are at work?

Woudl love to see some piccies of Pimms

Hi Gemma

Welcome to K9 , glad you took my advice . you will gets lots of help here

but to be honest I dont think having a puppy and working full time is fair on the dog at all , How can you possibly house train it ? I would NEVER sell one of my pups to anyone working more than a few hours a day . I gave up work to have my first dog many years ago for that same reason

Good luck :luck:

I let my pups sleep with me :b ,,they got to sleep, so did I,,but he's now a lot bigger and takes up half the bed   .

All the best with the little lass :luck:

Thanks for all the ideas everyone

:))

Good news is that Pimms is now very settled in her new cage and sleeps soundly all night in my room. Then we go out to the garden about 6.30am she she can do her business! Then we have brekkie and I get dressed, and then we go out and play from 7 till 8 so she can run about and play with her toys :huggles: !

I have taken the parcel shelf out of my car and have put the cage in there too. I thought that I would try her in it to see if she would yowl at work again but she has been perfect.

On the subject of working full time........ im only 23 so im not exactly going to be able to give up and look after her full time im afraid! But although I work full time I spend prob about 3/4 of my time out of the office on large estates. So Pimms will only be in the car on her own for a max of an hour at a time. The rest of the time I will be there or she will be out and about in some random field with me!

I appreciate the sentiment that working full time is not ideal, but if I didnt feel I couldnt offer her a great life then I wouldnt have got her. Im prepared to put the time and effort in to making her have fun, and I think her having to spend short periods of her life on her own is a small payoff in comparison to what I can offer her.

Not every person working full time spends their life indoors!

Back to Pimms now, enough about moi! She is very intelligent and has learned her name in about 3 days, in addition to this she also knows no, and stay. Ive been really impressed by how quickly she learns, she is also very loyal and loves people. She waggs at about 100mph!

We are off to the vet for injection 1 tomorrow, so not too long till we can go out little walks.

I have loads of pics of her but on my phone, if I can work out how to transfer them onto here then I will.

Im biased, but I think she is beautiful!

just one thing be careful about leaving her in the car on her own if you cant see her as she may get stolen

Good luck :luck: :luck:

To be fair, it sounds as though your job is ideal if you can take her out and about with you during your working day and she's not actually on her own for more than an hour at a time  but I agree that you should be very careful - whippets are highly nick-able, and you obviously won't be able to alarm your car with a moving body inside, so take great care to make sure you have her in your line of sight  it would be devastating if she was stolen :(

Have you had a look at the K9 Community FAQ section? There are lots of links there to threads where people have asked questions similar to yours and been given lots of good advice. Have a browse, you'll find tons of good information on everything from feeding to fire-works, and from kongs to collar types

Oh thanks for that- I never thought about her getting stolen :(

Luckily our carpark is private and right behind the office, and I can actually see her from my window.

The other day a client ran into my car and then made off without telling me..... but as our office backs onto the car park she was spotted by various members of staff....... £800 worth of damage, thank goodness our lot have eagle eyes....!

:D

Im going to get her microchipped too in a few weeks time.

Gosh I had never thought about how 'nickable' whippet babies are :( , people are so awful sometimes

Ive just been out for a leg stretch with Pimms, she was fast asleep unpside down having puppy dreams, very very cute :clown:

Everyone has been so helpful, thanks for all the ideas. I hadnt realised that whippets were so popular, I think they might be addictive o:) !

Pimms is coming with me to visit parents tomorrow for the first time, sure they wont be able to resist her either! :b

Oh, one more thing......

Any tips on preventing puppy car sickness?? :x

Any tips on preventing puppy car sickness??
I find regular short trips in the car everyday if possible with the windows down to let lots of fresh air in and they get used to the car in a matter of weeks

Both my whippets were car sick, Tilly now 15 months has grown out of it

Bean 6 months still is sick occasionaly but its not so often

Someone posted something about there ears or balance not being developed untill a certain age, which makes them sick?? cant remember who

re the car sickness, like I said, check FAQ, it's been covered a few times  good tips there for you.

On hot day even less than an hour in a hot car can be lethal. Even if you park in shade, the sun moves fast so you have to be very careful. My dogs come with me everywhere if possible, and it happened to me; parking my car with shade over the windscreen, running into a shop for something, only to find the sun on the windscreen and car quite hot few minutes later. :luck: :luck: :luck:

The silver reflector windscreen shields help somewhat.
