Hi,

We recently gave our cat back to her original owners, after having her for a year. Our whippet X, Stella, has been quite sad about it as they were quite close, looking for the cat everywhere. She has since been showing very marked quivering and shaking in her back legs, particularly the left one. She doesn't seem to have any pain from it at all, as we've felt it all over, including the hip and lower back and she didn't make a sound or try to pull away. We thought perhaps she's upset about the cat, except that the quivering seems to be interfering with her ability to walk, and her gait looks as though her back legs are very weak. However, she can run etc on her walks.

Any idea what could be causing this? Is it something that whippet crosses do when they are upset? Or has she maybe got a physical problem we should be checking out with the vet?

Thanks for any advice,

Best wishes,

Caroline and Keith

I don't know how old Stella is, but our oldest bitch, a miniature schnauzer, aged nearly 13, has had back legs tremor for 3 or 4 years now. She is not in any discomfort whatsoever. Her walking is unaffected - she keeps up with the rest of us, and is often out in front! It is becoming more severe as time passes, and when she is being groomed she has to sit down quite frequently!

She receives a daily dose of glucosamine and chondroitin and has no stiffness whatsoever in her joints.

Bryn my twelve year old whippetX has trembled all over like he's got parkinsons disease for the last couple of years but his left back leg had trembled for nearly five years...he seems perfectly fine though...he gets glucosamine and also green lipped muscle extract.

Hiya, Thanks to the two of you for taking the time to post. Stella is just 1 year and a few months and it has come on suddenly- but it sounds as though it might be harmless anyway. I guess we just have to wait and see for a bit to see if she gets over her trauma!

Given the tender age of your dog, I would suspect a trapped nerve or something else and personally I would take her to the vets to rule out it being anything serious. My boy has only trembled since he was middle aged so definitely wouldn't expect to see that in a youngster...as it's quite specifically her back and and as she is so young, i really would advise you to let the vet check her over. Best of luck and keep us posted.

I agree, at a year old I would want to get this checked out in case it's a spinal or nerve problem. It's quite common for older dogs to have shaky back legs but I wouldn't expect it in a youngster.

I really hope the vet is able to put your mind at rest and there's nothing to worry about :luck:

hi caroline

i've known this in an older dog but not in a young dog ,, only thing i can think is a trapped nerve

hope stella will be ok

a few years ago now i had two whippets around the same age sadly the slightly older one had cancer he was only 2, we had to have him put to sleep but the younger bitch when we took him & didnt return with him started to have head shakes which was stress related sounds very similar , hope it is only stress & nothing more sinister it passed after a couple of weeks

Just got back to this thread.

I agree with the other posters - your dog is too young to have this tremor! You should definitely get it checked out.

Hopefully it will be something straightforward which can be put right soon. :huggles:

Hi again folks,

Thanks a lot for your replies. My husband has reported (I'm not at home at the moment) that her back legs seem to be better now, suggesting that it might have been related to the trauma of losing the cat she grew up with from 9 weeks... poor little mopey dog. I'm going to keep a very close eye on her though when I get home to make sure that it has well and truly gone, otherwise we will certainly get her to the vets. When I walked her at the weekend she was running well which was encouraging.

I'll update later, hopefully with good news .

Hi, Well, it seems as though the tremors are resolving. Mostly her legs are not shaking at all anymore, although they've been a bit more shaky than usual at times when she's excited or cold. I think it must have just been emotional. Weird, huh?! However, she's in for a treat as we've gone and got a kitten who'll be arriving on Thursday morning, so I expect she'll perk up a bit :teehee:
