Hi I have just joined this group I have a 7 month old puppy shih tzu he is a really good dog easy to house train please could anyone tell me what age they had there shih tzu neutered at or whether you have a unneutered male he won't bred from he is very well behaved thankyou

I don't have shih tzus, but in general the health benefits of keeping them entire outweigh the risks. There is a very small chance of testicular cancer for example for an entire dog, because they obviously have testicles. However, neutering does not mean they still won't develop other forms of cancer, and in some instances it can increase the risk of them developing more aggressive forms of cancer if neutered. I would look at breed club websites for more information, and chat to those with experience in the breed and of course, his breeder who will be able to advise further.

Thankyou for replying I don't think I will neuter him he is no trouble at the moment very good dog hopefully this will not change .

As they say, if it ain't broke, don't fix it :) Be aware, though that a lot of dogs (including neutered males) don't like young unneutered males (once their puppy licence expires). Often the owners haven't worked out why their dog is normally fine but just occasionally goes for another dog, so aren't prepared for it. This isn't a reason for neutering, just being very aware of possible risks and avoiding an incident.

Some dog boarders day care or dog walkers wont always take entire dogs so you may want to factor that into your decision. ..some insurance premiums can be higher for un neutered dogs ...I have been researching as we have a 4 mth old pup ...we wouldn't neuter him before 2 yes old as he is a large breed ..if we neuter at all ...I think wait and see how your boy develops x

Thankyou for your reply luckily my friend will look after him if we go away ,I no its better to wait when u have a large breed dog as they mature so much later . I have a female jack russel who is 7 I waited till she had her first season but I found she got more aggressive to other dogs after that .She is fine when she gets to no them and she is good with my shih tzu. Enjoy your new pup .
