just wondering which is more liable to get ticks short or long haired dogs? since ive been in scotland nearly 7yrs the two dogs have in total 7 ticks. i will tell you later whos had most.

Oh I don't know - My dogs have never had many here - its the cats who get them the most?

Our old dog got a tick and we had to get a tool to get it out but we did take him to a wild area, he had long hair.

I think shorthair going by my experience. Our whippet has had around 5 in 3 years. Though there is the possibility that it makes no difference it is just easier for them to go unnoticed in a long haired dog.

oh god ticks! Please say its long haired ones, not had one on the dog yet. Not too many deer round here. Only ever found one on our old cat. They totally creep me out, and i have to admit i would find it difficult to attempt to get one off myself (my dad got the cats one off). I got them on me once while camping, about twenty or so, it was one of the worst couple of days i've ever had. Euuuggghhh

like caretaker said you got to be mainly.in fields, long grass, woods . thats where i mainly go. ok in my opinion its the short haired ones that seem to get more, my whipx since i got to scotland 7 yrs ago has had 7 compaired to just 1 with.my.longer haired saluki x. ive managed quite easy to sort them but the.last one gave him a infection so wasnt happy.

oo er the short haired ones! You got me creeped out now, i'm looking suspiciously at the dog; he has already been told he's not to bring any home with him or he's out on his ear.

Luckily, my bit of the downs is more scrub and pasture, not so many trees till you get a couple of miles inland, its pretty dry and not so much cover for deer, we got plenty of sheep tho . I did get one off me, a couple of years ago in the shower. It fell off/wasn't attached. I went to squish the little bugger and it just would not squish, had to flush it in the end. I read up on them then; they are related to spiders!!!! Eeeeuuuurrrggghh!

the thing is they didnt get one in england in nearly four yrs then woosh get them in scotland but there is deer 300 yrds from my house so could explain why.

Ewwww!! :blink: Thats horrible, I would have freaked! Ours get ticks fairly often- theres plenty of deer in the woods where I walk in the summer to avoid the adders. I pull them off with a tick puller (easy to see in the whippets' short coats) but they take lots of killing.. they really dont squash very easily :x

aint you supposed to burn them? read in a book from the fifties saying put a lighted match on their arse lol

tbh i did freak right out. I'd scraped a couple off in a panic before my boyfriend kindly got to work removing them. I don't know what i'd have done if i was by myself, probably driven myself to an a and e and begged them to help me out! It was so gross. They were the really tiny ones, really hard to spot at first till they got fat,

Oooo horrid little beggars. Apparently a good way to remove them is with liquid soup, soak a cotton bud with the soap and blob it onto the tick. It should make them drop off. I haven't had need to try this out yet, thankfully

I would agree with Lurcherman, when we used to take our dogs up to Scotland all picked up the odd tick except our Sheltie, we used to laugh and say if a tick got on her coat after fighting for ages to get through to the skin it got fed up and fell off to wait for an easier dog.

Same as if I ever find a flea - in a cup of water they go - I couldn't pop them! yuk!
