Should The Hunting Act Be Repealed?

I havent noticed any difference at all here in Cornwall. The local hunt carries on as it always did.

I am waiting for the day someone reports me for allowing my dogs to chase the rabbits in the dunes....as one holiday maker recently commented "arent you worried?"

"No" I said, "its what they were bred for, they're having a whale of a time."

"No" she replied, "I meant the poor rabbits"

I walk over miles of National Trust owned land. Recently one of the local farmers shot over 34 foxes on his farm, because they are not allowed to hunt on their land. Terrible, a massacre. At least hunting kills one at a time. Yes, it is time for the Law to be repealed.

The local hunts in Cornwall are hunting legally, be careful what you say. Letting your whippets hunt rabbits without the land owners permission could end up with you being prosecuted for illegal hunting. You are doing our breed no favours allowing them to hunt, I presume at Gwithian or Perranporth, you will get reported.

I suggest you read the act on hunting.

OOOps, sorry if my comments have upset you!!!!

Just a warning as you could get into trouble, serious trouble allowing your whippets to hunt where Jo public go. You can bet some anti hunting person will spot you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Hunting Act is one of the most unworkable pieces of legislation which has ever been produced by any government!!!

It is open to abuse and almost impossible to enforce  What is the point of it??!!!!

I think rabbits are classed as vermin(?), and therefore are not protected under this act if you have permission to hunt them on the land you are on  ie you own the land or you have been invited bring your dogs onto the land. I should imagine that the National Trust would not approve as they were quite vocal about the banning of hunting on their land :(

But it opens up a question over dogs chasing rabbits on council owned public rights of way. As tax payers, do we not own this land???

Yes the Act should be repealed as it does nothing to protect wild mammals.

Dogs (hounds especially) hunt by instinct which is what provides food for them in their natural state. They will kill as much as they need to eat. Humans, on the other hand, will kill for fun all day with a gun or with their car on the roads!!!!

(PS Wolves used to hunt and kill foxes, but humans took the wolves away so now the fox has no natural predator)

You have to realise that more than one dog makes a pack. Rabbiting without permission on any land can lead to trouble. They are classed as vermin, but you can't just go and let your dogs hunt them without prior permission!

It may be a treat for your dogs, but could all end in trouble!!!!!!!!!!!!. So take care.

I was not aware it made any difference whether it was private land or not- obviously I will have to read up on it some more!

Just as a point the land I usually walk on IS private land- a campsite dune area, which I have permission to walk on, although I will not be walking there now as it has opened now for Easter until September.

I do access The National trust areas too, but they are on leads there because of the cliffs, and one too many run-ins with aggressive dogs. :(
