Could anyone enlighten me as to the principal differences between show and racing bred whippets as far as a pet home is concerned? I've had no experience of racing bred dogs, Eli is show bred. I believe racers are likely to be somewhat smaller & finer? If so, is it a considerable difference? I just wonder if, now that I'm searching for a puppy again, I'm limiting my choices unnecessarily by only considering a show bred dog. That said, perhaps a racing breeder would consider it a waste for one of their dogs to go to a non racing pet home? Would really welcome anyone's thoughts on this. Thanks, Heidi :)

if you dont show, a show breeder could consider letting you have one of their better pups a waste.

depends on what you want to do with your dog, why pay top money for a "quality show breed" whippet if your not going to show. the same can be said for a racing breed whippet

if your not going to show or race you can get a non ped whippet for half the price

lost my non ped this year at the age of 14, if i could get the same dog again i wouldnt hesitate, she was ace

dont know if this helps

good luck :luck:

Race breds cover a pretty wide spectrum in size & type. They are on the whole smaller & lighter built than a show bred but there are big 'uns around. In fact some breeders may prefer to place bigger dogs in non-racing homes as racers avoid lines that throw big specimens. Temperament in racers is very good possibly better than a lot of the show lines. They can be a little more prey driven than a show dog but there are plenty of show dogs that love to chase. If you just want a pet there is very little difference in the two types. Both will basically behave like whippets i.e lounge on the furniture, hog the fire, steal anything tasty etc.

What !!!! do you mean like the coal miners whippet of old, the roots of the whippet :p

If there is a litter of racing pups available, I would just go and check them out. If you like the parents (both looks and temperament) get one. But the same goes for pup from "show" breeder. :luck: :luck: :luck:

LOL ..........Racers are normally smaller than show breds, in build, height and width .........They are often very bright with an extremly strong prey drive :) ........Racers IMHO resemble the original type Whippets ........and they really are the best (w00t)
