:b Following on from Granny-mo's question earlier. Say I entered my 14 month old dog in Junior and Novice. My dog comes first in Junior but comes second to dog B in Novice. (Dog B wasn't entered in Junior of course). Would I then still be able to go up in the dog winning line up, representing Junior, even though I would be up against Dog B that had beaten me in Novice? If I couldn't would there not be a Junior representative?

If I won Junior the sensible thing would be to withdraw from Novice but I guess this is not allowed.

You would not be able to withdraw from novice, no. You would not be eligible for BOB because you are not an unbeaten dog as you did not win your 2nd class.

No, you can't withdraw from Novice and no, you can't go into the challenge, you are now a beaten dog.

So there would be no dog from the Junior dog class in the challenge?

No, that is correct. Obviously, it follows that if you had won both classes there would then have been no representitive from Novice. In order to go into the challenge you must be unbeaten.

But if the dog that beat you in Novice got BOB and there was a Res BOB on offer you could be called back in to challenge for it !

As said, you wouldn't be in the final line up but if the Novice winner took BOB, you could be called in to challenge for RBOB or the RCC etc depending on what type of show it is.

Just to echo what has already been said. You CAN NOT withdraw from a BREED class to remain unbeaten.

:) Ah..I get it now. But I understand that in certain circumstances puppies can withdraw from other classes to remain unbeaten and compete for Best Puppy in Show. How does that work?

If my dog was 8 months old and won his Puppy class but came 2nd to a 3 year old in Novice could it go into the challenge to compete for Best puppy? Or are the puppy finalists (say 1st in Minor Puppy Dog, Puppy Dog etc) judged separately?

You can only withdraw from variety classes.

Yes if your under 12 month won puppy and was 2nd to an over 12 month it can challenge for Best Puppy because it has not been beaten by a puppy.

Just to clarify, you couldn't take the puppy into the challenge as you would be unbeaten, you would wait till the end and then challenge for best puppy.

I think you mean beaten.

A good steward would call for 'all unbeaten dogs' and Best Puppy is ALWAYS done after Best of Breed/Best Dog or Best Bitch.

Oooops, well spotted! Yes of course I meant to put beaten. Just meant you still wouldn't be able to stand in the lineup to challenge for BOB.

just to come from a differing angle, if you are beaten in Novice or any other subsiquent class, the judge prefers that dog, so even if you could withdraw from your next breed class (which we've all accertained that you cannot), the judge would still prefer that other dog, even if it's just in maturity, it's still the judges preference in that class.

I am glad somebody asked this. It has just clarified what I was wondering. I have now understood correctly. Thanks.
