What do you have to do? Is it like pedigree showing - ie. stand dog up, move it on a triangle etc? Does the lurcher (or terrier) have to be a worker to be placed up the line?

Yes they have to stand and then do a triangle. No they don't have to be workers, but its a lot easier if they are. They have to be very fit to get anywhere. I asked for some advice from some judges last year and they pointed out one muscle on Nana that was 'flabby' and suggested 5 miles a day on the road and that would improve her chances (she does quite well anyway).

Hope this helps.

It is great fun.

The judge should look for condtion, confirmation, and movement and pick the best put together lurcher in the show ring NOT THE OWNER

Oooo, I might give it a go then - I've noticed that there is a show locally. Getting Rupert to stand up for inspection rather than roll over to have his tummy tickled will be the biggest challenge

HY

CAN I GIVE YOU A WORD OF ADVICE TOO? ALWAYS REMEMBER THAT ONE JUDGES OPPINION IS DIFFERENT FROM THE NEXT MORE SO WITH LURCHERS THAN PEDIGREE DOGS. PEDIGREE DOGS HAVE A STANDARD TO MEET, NO MATTER WHAT BREED AND LURCHERS ARE LURCHERS! AS THE REPLY ABOVE STATES THERE A FEW MAIN CRITERIA THAT ARE ALWAYS THE BASIC GUIDELINES...CONDITION, CONFORMATION, MOVEMENT, THEN EACH JUDGE HAS THEIR OWN "QUIRKS". PERSONALLY I LOOK FOR A NICE TOPLINE, FROM THE BASE OF THE NECK RUNNING RIGHT DOWN ONTO THE TAIL ROOT. THAT AND COAT CONDITION ALWAYS GET MY EYE, BUT MAYBE NOT THE NEXT JUDGE IN THE NEXT SHOW! REMEMBER ITS ALL A BIT OF FUN..BUT IF YOUR LIKE ME...YOULL PLAY TO WIN!!

GOOD LUCK JOHN

I,ve a friend whose lurcher gets surpreme champion of show, good going when theres over 150 lurchers.

Then the next week with a different judge, don,t even get the 2nd viewing ??

Tongue in cheek is my approach, but some are very serious about it.

Can make for some brilliant days out in the summer, love the banter between the dog owners.

Watch out for the terriers chewing each other up !!

Mike
