My parents have a whippet and we are soon to be getting a whippet puppy. I was just wondering what the law, or people’s opinion says, when a dog like this would catch a wild animal.

Obviously we wouldn’t train the dog to hunt, but it is in their nature to chase to catch things that move fast, i.e. rabbits, squirrels etc.

My parent’s dog has caught things in the garden and the odd rabbit out on a walk.

I would always walk the dog (parents one or our puppy) on a lead when I know there is livestock or in a residential area (cats!), but (and I think I am finally getting to my question here!!) what would happen if someone reported me if my dog caught a rabbit whilst in the country side or (god forbid) actually caught a cat in our back garden?

well, we have a cat next door to us who is always in our garden

gypsy has a great dislike for them, and i have been round on several occasions to voice my concerns about it!

they have said the cat can look after itself and will give as good as it gets!!

so as far as im concerned if gypsy ever gets hold of it, what will happen will happen!!!I hope she never does, but if its in my garden what can i do?? im more worried about the damage the cat could do to my gypsy!!!!

as the cat is in MY garden its kind of tough luck, if gypsy got hold of one anywhere else it would be different, but im always on the look out for them if she's off lead !

As for rabbits, if she gets hold of one when we are out in the fields then so be it.

if we have come across sheep, cows ect...i always put her on her lead.
