Hi.

I have a bitch, which I have no intentions of breeding just yet.

-BUT-

My little lad "may" have got her in the family way.. .. ..

Is there any small tell tale signs to look for, apart from taking her to a vets ?

The reason for my uncertainty, is :-

- She is putting on weight since her season ended.

- She may have suffered a phantom pregnancy. (her breasts did swell / large nipples).

- I have also just changed over to a BARF diet, and unsure if it's just over feeding.

I don't want to cut back on her food supply at the moment, because if she is in the family way - it could harm the litter on short food supply. It feels like a catch 22 position at the moment.

Thanks for any help.

Hi

Sometimes a false pregnancy can look like the real thing. Some bitches even thing they are going into labour. Unless you are any good at palpating the abdomen and feeling for any pups it is really a job for the vet. Even then a scan may be called for. It isnt really a good idea to leave her and see if she has any pups as you need to be prepared if she is. How long ago was she in season? If she is far enough on you can see the pups moveing.

Dont worry about cutting down on the food if she is pregnant. My jack russel hardly ate a thing during her pregnancies especially near the end and had two healthy litters. I honestly didnt think she was eating enough to keep herself alive let alone grow pups but they were lovely chubby babies.

Is there a experienced breeder near you that could have a look at her and see what they think?

Thanks for the reply.

Her breasts/nipples have gone down now.

She finished her season around 7 weeks ago.

But since her nipples have gone down, she has started to pile on weight around her waist. I am keeping a close eye on her, but there is no movement inside her belly.

I may be over-feeding her (new barf diet takes time to get used to). My other 2 dogs are doing well on the BARF diet, but she may just have a different tollerance to the diet.

I think - just to be on the safe side, I will pop her along to the vets tonight for a chat. (I just hate talking to him about her feed - he seem to dislike the barf diet).

Thanks again.

been sick or leaving her meal

also they can change in character

So, is she in the family way?

Sorry I never answered to the replies - I have only just come across them. :- "

No she wasn't in the family way - but I do think it was a phantom........

Funny I should come across this post, because as I read this - she is currently in her second season. (and yes I am planning to breed her with my little lad)..

I'll try to keep you updated with any progress.

:) :) :) :)

I’m so frustrated.

Done my home work – read the books – investigated the cycle period.

-BUT NOTHING- :(

She is currently on what I believe to be her 14th day. My male has been sniffing/licking her like crazy. Follows her everywhere. He gets so frustrated if she is out of sight…….

He’s now started to protect her, knocking my other bitch away if she comes too close.

BUT NO SIGNS OF MOUNTING HER ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! :( :( :(

Don’t know what to do for the good.

The wife keeps telling me to assist, but I have no idea how I should do that… :- "

Might get them some Barry White music & candles……………..

If anyone knows – all suggestions welcome. (Serious).
