Hi

we have been having a few problems with our whippet Woody,he has been in pain and struggling to get up onto his front legs after lying down.

His posture is bad and he has trouble holding his head up at the normal height.

he is moving awkwardly too and when his spine was gently pressed by me his front legs buckled when light pressure was applied just behind his shoulder blades.

he went to the vets tonight and slipped disc was mentioned....we have to see how Woody is in the next 24hours before we start blood testing and x rays etc.

he has an infection too and has been puking quite merrily and is off his food completely(although a small amount of grated cheese seemed to be vaguely appealing tonight)

due to the vets caution and our concerns i would really appreciate any advice or info relating to slipped discs in whippets.

thanks. xx

Sorry to hear about poor Woody . A friend of mine had a shiba with similar troubles and took her to a dog osteopath who specialises in greyhounds . He corrected the problem with no surgery required .

Hope this helps :huggles:

Sorry to be so obvious but have you/the vet taken his temperature. If he is off his food and being sick, not to mention tender to touch then a slipped disc may only be one of the possible diagnoses.

Hi, If the pain he is in is severe enough this can cause other symptoms such as high temp. I have had whippets with neck damage although not slipped disc and it has shown as same as yours. tis is VERY painful and the slightest knock will cause great distress. Mine responded to Metacam and were fine after a few days but the problem can reoccur with knocks.

Im sure vet will get to bottom of it just try to keep him quiet where he feels safe

Good luck Jan

will he only eat if you lift food up to him? is he wobbly and looking at you moving his eyes to the top of his head rather than lifting his head? i dont mean to scare but i have a bitch that had meningitis at 8 months with symtoms simular to what your describing and my vet suspected back/spinal

I would deffinately keep a close eye on his temperature, an injury might be to be blame but a nasty infection could cause all those symptoms to

hope Woody is up and well again soon :luck: :luck: :luck:

Woody is in the vets today on a drip and having blood tests and x rays.

he's a very unhappy bunny at the moment and we have no idea just yet what is wrong....could be a simple infection which has got the better of him or could be something else.

aaarrrrggghhhh it makes me nervous waiting for the phone to ring to know how he is

poor Woody, sounds painful :( :huggles:

hope you get to the bottom of this quickly :luck:

Hi i'm sorry to hear of woodys problems .

My grandad had a whippet many years ago that was mis diagnosed with a slipped disk by is vet she showed simlar symptoms sadly for her it turned out to be tetnus.

I hope that this is not the case for your dog but its a possibility well worth looking into. I wish you the best of luck and hope that its nothing serious.

Woody has been kept in the vets tonight :( ,he is alert apparently and the first xray seems ok.

the blood test showed slightly raised amylase which "could" indicate he has had some degree of pancreatitis.

also his albumin and phosphorus is low.

they will try to get him to eat in the morning and see if he keeps food down....if not they are going to give him barium to see if it goes through his system and to check for blocked intestines.

we are forgetting about slipped discs for now as his pain may have been misdirected.

spare a thought for my boy as he's alone in a cage without his favourite cuddly sheep....i also made his tea automatically tonight and then realised he wasn't here :(

Poor Woody and how awful for you. How is he today?
