garden_july_2009_024_1_.jpgOur bitch Ollie, now 20 months, old has a bald patch of about 3/4 ninch long and 1/4 inch wide just above the half way mark on her tail. I remember reading something about this a long time ago but cannot recall much. She has not yet had her first season. Advice welcome, Netheredgegarden_july_2009_024_1_.jpg

One of my whippets had this and the vet said there is a gland in the tail and sometimes baldness can occur at that point .

That sounds like it's almost definitely Stud tail (not confined to dogs I should add, despite the name).

Two of our boys have had this and at times the bald area got pretty big, however recently it's almost completely disappeared.

It is nothing to worry about, it's just an over active gland. Frequent washing or putting on sudo creme daily can help. But really it is more of a cosmetic issue.

Diesel suffers with this and as Rachel said it really is cosmetic. It doesn't worry Diesel at all and varies in size from nothing to quite large.

Zana has a little patch that comes and goes :))

2 of my more dominant bitches have this, i have been told it's all to do with testosterone levels, some bitches carry higher than normal amounts, but its nothing to worry about, id be interested to read about the behaviour of others folks girls with it...as both mine are very bossy and dominant over the other dogs, in fact one was so bad i had her spayed last year.

My dog has it and I wondered what it was and was told it was a scent gland and has something to do with testerone. Hes quite hairy and I noticed this part starting to bald.

My whippet girl with the bald patch was very bossy and dominant too

I'm glad you posted this. Gracie (10 months and already had her first season) has developed one mid way up her tail but its not completely bald. Because she's had tummy problems recently I had her anal glands checked but they're fine.

The proper name for stud tail is supracaudal gland infection.

As I've already said it is certainly no cause for concern

I have often wondered why Jinny has a bald patch like this and never could work it out!! So I'm very pleased to hear that there is a reason for it :D

Jinny is the lead bitch of my pack and is very dominant, lifting her leg to wee in order that scenting can be viewed by the others, as well as "humping" :b some of her subordinates

Jinny's bald patch has appeared slowly over the last couple of years and is now quite obvious. It isn't very wide, but about a centimeter long and never seems to change size for better or worse

My Zana is the only one of mine to have it,

but she is my shyest girl, no dominance at

all in her.
