Is the italian greyhound the only sighthound out there smaller than a whippet? I have been looking into smaller dogs. When I get a third dog I would like it to be a little one and I would really love it to be a sighthound . The Igs bone problems and general hyperness is not really what I am looking for although I love the look of these dogs. One option is a racing bred whippet but I think the smallest is 17 inches?. I have never seen a small lurcher apart from recently on here, which was an ig cross and I am guessing an Ig crossed with something else would still have the personality traits of the Ig anyway. I so love the whippets temperment. I wish there was a dog out there just like them except in a smaller package! :)

I have seen racing bred whippets online that are 16 inches, is that the smallest? I think a race bred whippet is the way to go. Can you tell when they are pups what height they might make?

I saw the tiniest whippet I have ever seen last weekend at a lure coursing meeting I went to.

I did think it was an italian greyhound but the owners told me it was all KC registered and definitely a whippet!!

I guess it's the luck of the draw as to how big they get. The size of the parents is a good indicator, but they can always throw back to a larger size even then.

yes, it is certainly possible to get a whippet around 16 in tall. other possibilities a whippetx, Cirneco dell Etna and Pharoah hounds are somewhat whippety in appearance and even Bedlington and Manchester terriers - but you would have to find out more about their temperaments

aren't cirnecos and pharoahs bigger or at least the same size as a whippet?

beddyXwhippet maybe?

why would anyone want something like a whippet but not anyways

you can never tell what size a puppy will grow to, my violet is under 16inches tall, and people often think she is an IG, but she is a KC reg whippet.

its the luck of the draw im afraid, you might pick the smallest in a litter who grows on to be the biggest!

I have a small female Whippet she is 16ins I got her from Lancashire she is KC Registered I have got her papers, I do not now what her parents were like I didnt see them as I got her from a rescue situation, I do wonder if she comes from raceing parents, I was at the coursing crew meeting on 15 november and lots good info. The only problem with her being small little toes under my feet get trod on, but she bosses of my large male whippet around.

When i went to pick up my 1st whippet puppy a month ago, i walked into the house and the mum was TINY, i would have sworn she was an IG but she wasn't, she was very small, the smallest whippet i have ever seen, my puppy (Indi) is going to be small but well built i think.

I often see a women walking with her ped whippet, he is smaller than my Lurcher who is 19tts, i would say this whippet is about 16ins

I guess it is just luck!

Just wonderd if you live in west Northamtonshire area, my small whippet is called Indi as well that was the name she already had, it seems to be a popular name at the moment.

You are right about Pharoah hounds not being smaller than whippets, but Cirneco ideal height for bitches according to UK standard is 16 ½ - 18 ¼ ins. Unlike whippets where slightly taller than the standard specifies seems to be the norm, the Cirnecos I've seen are not over the "ideal" height. I had never looked at the Cirneco standard before today, but they always appeared to me to be a bit smaller than whippets. Here is a link to a kennel in N Ireland which plans to have a Cirneco litter next year: http://www.freewebs.com/eindackel/

(whippetwise, these are not the same people I mentioned to you in my pmail)
