Snowy is a 6 month old Lurcher and is currently on foster in Cardiff.

The Snowy Fact File

Dog status: Excellent

Cat status: Unknown

Child status: Very good

Home alone: Can be left for short periods, looking for someone home for best part of the day

House training: Good but odd accident

Basic training: Started on the basics

Snowy is a beautiful white lurcher with a black eye patch and dalmatian spots on her ears commonly known as naughty spots. Oh and Snowy is a tripawd who recently had her leg amputated but you know what that hasn’t spoiled her zest for life. She is also almost certainly deaf!

Snowy is in foster with another lurcher and is very sociable and gets on brilliantly with him. She is playful but also respectful of his space and loves to groom him and kiss him. She has politely greeted all the dogs she has met outside the home. Snowy could be rehomed with or without canine company as long as she has regular play dates with other dogs.

Snowy is not in foster with cats or small animals so we are not able to say whether she could live with them in the home or not. The vets do think she was worked in her previous home so care would need to be taken if we considered a home with cats or small animals. She however does ignore the local squirrels; or is that because she just hasn’t fully developed those naughty spots.

Snowy loves people and children and hasn’t shown any nervousness around new people. She is in foster with children from mid primary age upwards. She doesn’t chase when they are running around and is happy to cuddle up and watch cartoons. She could be rehomed with dog savvy children 5 and above.

Snowy has some basic training but this has been delayed while her amputation site was healing and the subsequent discovery that she is almost certainly deaf. She will sit on signal and walks nicely on the lead. She has been off lead and does not let life get her down. She doesn’t let her tripaw status stop her and can still give the resident dog a run for his money. However she doesn’t stray far and recalls well with the other dog. Her new owners must remember though that she is deaf doesn’t come when called or hear any loud noises and doesn’t react when people come into the house etc. Her fosterers are currently teaching her signals for sit, come and wait.

Snowy is almost clean in the house but cannot be left for long or accidents happen. She has been left for short periods of time with canine company but does bark initially before settling when left and this would need to be worked on in her new home. Due to her age and her hearing loss we are looking for a home where she will have company for most of the day and they can build up slowly the time she is left and allow her to acclimatise gently. She is still a puppy and needs to be given appropriate toys to chew on. She has shown food guarding with the other dog so this is another area of work. However if you want a helper in the house Snowy can do just that, not only does she help you sweep she will also eat the sweepings! She is also a singer and will sing to her chauffer when in the car. She isn’t happy travelling on her own in the boot so will require short journeys to build up her confidence in the car and a secure crate or dog guard. Sometimes it’s good not to hear your own voice!

In summary, Snowy is looking for a specific home that can cope with her disability; not so much the obvious disability as that is not a problem and she is more than capable of living an active life on 3 legs but more her unseen or rather unheard disability. She will need specific training for deaf dogs and may benefit from being homed with another dog. However she is bright and if the owner is prepared to work with her she could be rehomed as an only dog leading to a closer intuitive bond between dog and human. One thing that is essential though is that her new owners are prepared to scratch her right ear as she cannot do it herself and gets in a pickle when it itches; her stump goes bonkers!
