There should be absolutely no problem at all buying an Italian Greyhound puppy now so long as you have enough money in your pocket. This sales pitch from the internet sites about Iggies being rare is pure fantasy. Registrations have rocketed these past two years and the prices have dropped in line with all other breeds of dogs from the ridiculous £2750 to the £450 or below if you hesitate long enough when told the price. Personally I would wait for the end of summer sales you could be offered buy one get one free LOL

I do laugh when I hear about these people who are all so nice, Umm hello they are in the business of selling you something, if they were horrible you would walk away. Actually some of them are genuinely nice people when they are not involved in anything to do with dogs. They are genuinely at a loss when they are verbally attacked about their breeding practices on forums such as this but what they never ever do is stop what they are doing or even try to improve on what they do because they just have no morals when it comes to dog breeding and descend into LA LA Land where "we cant hear you" :-

I have heard it all over the past few years about why people breed Iggies. So let me think

. They are so lovely everyone should have one

. Everyone who wants an Iggie should be allowed to have one (even if they are totally unsuitable and the dog is going to live a miserable life)

. I found it hard to get one so I am going to breed them so other people like me can have one too and that will show all those snooty breeders who turned me down.

But folks lets be up front here not one and I mean not one has been honest enough to say

. I am breeding them to make lots of money

. I have seen a niche in the market and I am going to exploit it

. I actually dont care if the puppies break their legs or have epilepsy later on as I wont be taking it back.

. I will sell without endorsements as that means I have no further responsibility to the puppy.

. I will sell without endorsements as that makes me out to be a reasonable person and actually I can charge more money.

If you read back over previous posts there has been much written about buying an Iggie. The way I look at it is you can advise people where or where not to buy but if they choose not to take that advice that is up to them and no one elses business. BUT and heres the big BUT when it all goes horribly wrong who is it they get in touch with first or who do they get in touch with when that really nice person who sold them a puppy shrugs their shoulders, smiles sweetly and walks away?

I do also wonder if all those out there who dont have any contact with Iggies other than through this forum would be so blase about some one in whippets breeding excessive amounts of litters especially if Whippets had the amount of potential health problems that Iggies have. Would you also be happy about some one in Pugs making comment about people in whippets being so horrible on a forum when the whippet people have tried to defend their breed? I keep reading that everyone has an opinion well that appears to be everyone except establisehd people in Iggies who are trying to give genuine advice or express the frustration they feel about the ignorance being spouted about our breed.

And lets be honest about this within the breed there are only a very few breeders (established or internet) of iggies out there who are trying to breed healthy stock ie free of leg breaks, epilepsy, colitus, leg perthes, liver shunt etc.

The back street breeders now account for more than 50% of the registrations on the Breed record supplement each quarter. Just by looking at the parents anyone in the breed will know what the potential health problems will be.

All puppies are sweet but what we are trying to do is steer people towards puppies that will make it through to becoming adults with a fighting chance of being healthy and that ideal companion they really are. Not a potential drain on finances or the cause of continuing heartache and endless trips to the vets. And even more sadly despite the health problems encountered some of these owners will go on to breed from these iggies so that even more people can benefit from having an iggie.

At this point in time it is widely recognised that the breed is in decline and there is nothing that can be done about it except to ride it out and try to pick up the pieces when they have all got bored and moved on to other poor breeds.

So I apologise on behalf of everyone in Iggies for daring to be concerned for our breed or the people wanting to own them, whatever are we thinking of!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well said Jan, you have summed up the back street breeders perfectly in your post. Everything you have said is absolutely spot on, although sadly as you say where money is concerned it falls on deaf ears.

There was an advert in the adtrader this week for Iggy @ £250.

There's nothing online though so i guess the advert was pulled

but not in time tostop it going out in the paper.

It has to be a misprint or maybe its a iggy x, i can't see anyone

selling a iggy for that price.
