I really can't see why the KC isn't allowing exhibitors to use soft cages at Crufts, wire mesh ones only and they can't be covered.

We always covered the Akita's cages at the shows so just as well they are not shown anymore so are not going to Crufts.

So what if the public want to see dogs - GO TO DISCOVER DOGS - that is what it is there for. Dogs on benches do not want to be hugged, mauled and jumped on, especially when the owner is not there to ask first.

I completely agree. I always make sure one of us is watching the dogs. I don't trust the public not to let their kids poke and prod and "feed the nice doggie a choccy bar" . Still we only pay £20 + for entries, what do we matter. :- "

i agree,

no matter what the KC say mine will be covered for at least part of the day so they can have some respite from people peering at them,it is more than likely that some of the dogs will be at the show for the best part of ten hours and as dogs are sensitive to being stared at i think the benches should be a place for them to be left alone to relax. the ring and discover dogs should be where the general public view the dogs not the benches

edited because i can't spell

I cant see how the KC are going to be able to `police ` the fact we have cloth cages , what are they going to do ?

a) stop you taking it in with you when you arrive ?

b) demand you take the dog out of it and leave it loose on the bench ?

lets be honest .Soft cages now out number the heavy metal ones at about 2-1 easily .

As Becky said . if they want to see the bred let them go to Discover Dogs :))

:( this was also printed in 2005 schedule, i took 3 soft crates and used them !!!

I can't see how they can police it either unless they get the YKC members to walk round and report people. I wouldn't put it past them (the KC not YKC) (w00t)

If they stop you taking cages in, where are they going to house hundreds of soft crates and how do you know you get your own back at the end of the day.

I would not leave Bradley loose on a bench.

I don't even have a soft cage but if I did I would take it, if everyone showing took soft cages and not wire mesh ones, what would they do? They can't not allow you in as there would be no dogs!!

I would like to say that the public be banned from the benching area altogether but it is an ideal place for friends who are not showing to meet you.

i saw a lot of people with soft cages while i struggled on the train with my heavy metal one :(

im going by train again next year and im taking my soft cage :- "

I used my soft crate last year and no one complained. Dogs feel much more secure in their "tents" and I think they are entitled to a bit of privacy and the chance to rest during their long day. If visitors want to see a certain dog outside the crate they only have to ask, or watch them in the ring.

Just going off topic a minute - is there a good online soft crate supplier (good value) that you'd all recommend? And can you leave a dog unattended in one (ie would my whippets be okay in a soft crate overnight, I'm thinking of using one to wean them out of their metal crate). :)

I have left my dogs in them overnight/during the day when I am at work and had no problems, there is always one up in the sitting room anyway and often all three girls are piled in their together out of their own choice. I think it depends on the dog.

I buy mine from

Stock Nutrition

because I like the square shaped ones and although I sometimes have trouble with the poles that is just me being cackhanded!!!

Thanks Dessie. That looks a good website

I have one up in the lounge and tyhe dogs love it , we Call it the `wendy ` house except when Woody is in it , then its the

WOODY house

Has anyone ever had a whippet chew its way out of one of those soft crates? I would just expect they'd be able to do that having seen how mine have destroyed certain things over time - especially when they are young.

The soft crates are banned from our local kennel club shows here as we've had too many incidents where aggressive dogs have not been able to be contained in them and attacks have happened because of it.

One dog went rolling down a hill inside his soft crate - because he lunged at another dog as it walked past.

Hope the dog was ok, what an awful experience for him.

At a local open show an unattended Akita bitch flew at another dog, she was in a soft cage and it fell over. How she didn't rip it open I don't know. Akitas are not the ideal breed for a soft crate.

I had one bite the zipper & unzipped one side & just walked out. :b

You enter the show under those rules so that is the end of it. Personally, I think it is up to the owner if the dog can be contained. o:)

My Harry ( aka Ch.Peperone King of Gold) managed to unzip his way out of one a year or 2 ago and in the process let his friend out. His friend took off and wasn't seen for a day or so. It was a miricle she wasn't hit by a car and that she was found.

I nearly got arrested trespassing on the paper mill property that we thought she was hiding on. 2 big security brutes threatened to throw me to the ground, I found the experience terrifying( though I know some whippeteers here in Australia who would have been very excited by the prospect) . She's gone on to win quite a few BIS's etc and is central to her breeders program. The soft crate doesn't get used anymore!! (w00t) and Harry isn't invited to share crates with girlfriends anymore either. :(

:teehee:  :teehee:  What a lovely mental picture

Maybe it is just for safety reasons as some dogs can escape from soft crates (mine certainly can  ) But they seem to forget that its a long way from the car park to the halls and with everything you have to carry plus a dog there will be some hernias. They should employ helpers or provide trolleys
