Hello all,

I was wondering if i could have a bit of advise/ info please on whippet racing.

When I got Smirnoff I was not intrested in racing, and I am not intrested in professionaly racing, because I want to keep feeding her the way I am, I heard some have to go on certain diets ??

but my problem is that Smirnoff needs to run, she has run of the garden and gose on daily walks, unfortunatly her re-call skills are not the best so she can't go off the lead yet, she is pritty stubborn !!!!!! :b

but I was wondering if racing her would be good way of her running off her energy in an enclosed space.

she is young (5 months old) and I think that racing her would be a goodway of burnin up energy.

I know there is the "south west racing club" in Taunton,

I have a few questions,

can a spayed whippet still race ?

and after having the operation how long do you have to wait to race after ??

How do I get into it ?

is there amerter like racing ??

Thankyou for your time :)

Speyed whippets can still race. You will have to wait until she is completely healed from the operation. I race dogs so don't know how long that would take but others will on here. I'm thinking 12 weeks min but could be wrong.

How to start racing? Find your closest club and then you will find contact details of the secretary of that club on the Whippet Club website. The Whippet Club from there select racing and then Racing Club Contacts. If the club has a forum on here Pedigree whippet racing clubs then go to that clubs forum and you will find contact details and also details of when the club is racing. You mentioned West Somerset at Taunton, they are intending starting their racing season in March and Margaret's contact details are on the forum. When any club runs it is of course weather dependent. K9 board member Rae is the moderator for West Somerset and if you contact her can answer your questions re the club.

You can start running your puppy for short distances behind a mechanical lure after 6 months of age but even before that you can play with them on a lure and get them used to the sight and sounds.

ALL whippet racing is amateur. Some of us become a tad fanatical about it and it takes over our lives to a certain extent but we do it for fun (honest  )

Hopefully I'll see you down at West Somerset this summer.

Hello there, All I can say your puppy is far to young to race, any club will give you very good professional advice if you go to one

Also your puppy is far to young to be spayed, they normally can be done after there 1st season, I only have dogs, but alot of people that own bitches will tell you and give you the best advice

Don't worry about your little girl she will learn about certian things as she is growing

Hope this will help you

I've had all my bitches spayed, and it depends on how they do the operation as to how soon she can run after. If she is spayed on the flank, that is to say the incision is in her side, then you would be best to wait a month before running her again, as this involves cutting through muscle. Apart from the vet I used to work for, I've never known any other vets spay in this way, but they thought it best. My last two have been spayed midline, and quite neat incision requiring only two stitches. I was amazed when the vet said they could run after stitches were removed at 10 days. We didn't race them for about 3 weeks, but let both off on the field after 10 days, and were amazed that they ran as if they'd had nothing done.

Give the racing a go, it doesn't have to be serious, and you can get a lot of pleasure from seeing your dog run, even if it doesn't win. They enjoy it like nothing else in the world :D

Edited as I've just thought - I forgot to say that she won't race until she is 12 months old, but you can start with the training at 6 months.

Hi you've been given fab advice from the ladies above ........ It takes 12 weeks for the eternal stitches to dissolve after a bitch has been spayed .....So only lead walking for that time ......Your little girl seems a bit too young at the mo to think about spaying IMO as well, but at 5 months old she'll be able to go and "play" at most racing clubs so she gets used to the noises, other dogs (most are very loud at racing  ), lure playing, traps etc .....

Taunton is a lovely, friendly club and you would be made to feel really welcome there :D .....As for feeding ....my lot don't do ribs or special diets ;) ....and ALL peddie racing is amateur, though club racing is more relaxed and calmer :D :luck:

Hi I race my whippie at West Somerset Club (Taunton). We are a friendly crowd and we would help you any way we could. Why not pop down when we start again in March. It would be good to see you and Smirnoff.

If you want Maragret's telephone number just pm me or Rae

Thankyou for all the advise,

I don't plan on Spaying Smirnoff till she has had her first season of course !!

but I wanted to know in advance about how long she should rest after, so that I am not in the dark and do the wrong thing !!

I know at 5 months she cannot race, I know she has to be 12 months, but I wanted to know if she could go along and as some of you said "play a bit" to see it all, I'm not bothered if she dosen't win, but I think she would enjoy running and meeting other dogs !! :)

Thanks again for the advise and I will contact Taunton !!! :) :)

Hi,

Just to say that you'd both be very welcome at Taunton. :D As long as she's 6 months old in March she can start to run behind the lure and have a few handslips - she'll love it.

As Pat (Blue Noise) has said please PM either of us if you'd like to come along, need directions etc.

Hope to see you there 8)
