Went for a walk round a huge bootfair an hour or so ago. Took my beagle Parker with me along with a bottle of water and a bowl for him.

It's very hot and although a little cloudy it is red hot each time the sun comes out.About 30 degrees in full sun.

Parker and i enjoyed a nice walk round and i gave him his water at intervals and bought him an ice cream too. We enjoyed our browse and as we left with some books and a few cuddly toys for the whippets,we noticed barking from the carpark.

Walked over and lo and behold some complete morons had left a little blue whippet in their car...it was a peugeot 106 so the rear window is very sloping and the whole back seat was in full sun. They'd left a sun shade thingy in the front window but the dog had pulled it down so the whole front of the car was in full sun.

They'd left water but the whippet had drunk it all.

He was standing on the back seat panting hard and howling. I called the police and reported it.At the same time a steward at the bootfairhad gone off shouting to try to find the owners.

While i was on the phone to the police, the owners returned and they were very very angry and abusive, swearing and shouting and suggesting it had F all to do with anyone blah blah blah, after all the cursing etc they got in their car and left.

I still feel like killing them. How can people still be such morons? When will people get the message about not leaving dogs in cars?

why why why are people so completely ignorant and hateful?

:b sorry i'm just so totally incensed.

You are completely right to get so incensed. And it has EVERYTHING to do with everyone else. I hope it hasn't completely ruined your day tho.

Thoughtless, cruel idiots. I wish someone would sit them in a hot car with no windows open, nothing to drink and loads of thick clothing on, that they could not remove.

Sadly tho, I think they still would miss the point by a mile.

Did the police actually turn up?

No the police did not come out because the people got in their car and left when they realised that several people were bearing down on them with no sympathy for them at all.

The police did say they keep the details and complaint on file so that if they get complaints again they will do something, they also said they report it to the RSPCA themselves too.

My day had been shaping up really nicely, enjoyed a nice walk with the whippets early on etc but it really put a downer on the day seeing that little dog roasting.

The thing that annoys me most is if the dog had died in that car the owner would be sobbing and crying and grizzling etc and yet they would basically have murdered their own dog.

The ignorance of some people just really amazes me. I was driving home the other day with the dogs in the back and the Air Conditioner BLASTING as it was 89F outside. I shut the AC off for 2 minutes to take a hands free phone call (otherwise they can't hear anything through the hum of the AC) and in that 2 minutes (remember car already cool), it got SO stuffy it was unbelievable.

I've heard all kinds of excuses from 'dogs don't feel the heat' (don't get me started on THAT one  ) to 'I was just a couple of minutes'. The second one from a lady who's dog/car we had been watching for well over half an hour and we had been giving the dog a drink through the semi-opened window.

yes, on occasion I will leave them for a couple of minutes as I run into the shop - or at shows while I unload and set up and go back for them, but in weather like we've been having not a chance! I couldn't believe at East of England where the temp was over 75F at 9am and muggy we were still getting calls for dogs in cars after 11am! That was a day there was no way I was leaving the dogs in the car for even 10 minutes while I went to set up. They came with me that day - it was just WAY to hot and muggy.

Anyway, just my rant

thts awful

people like tht don't deserve dogs

i must admit i don't leave the dogs in the car at all ever.

we have a Landrover Defender which has all the windows blacked out but even so it still gets really hot in there.

If you can't take a dog with you....leave it at home....how difficult is it for people to understand.

i also don't understand why anyone would go to a bootfair and leave the dog in the car even if it was winter....bootfairs are great for a stroll with the dogs, even my naughty beagle who barks at other dogs is still a joy to mooch with.

i have a purpose built dog cage in the back of my car (with padlock!) and blacked out windows so no-one can see them ....although it is cool and safe... i would never leave them in the car EVER!

I have a travel clock in my car that also tells the temperature . When I've been at work all day with a reflective screen in the front window and my windows blacked out obvisously not the driver and passenge doors or the windscreen the temperature in my car at 4 oclock has been 47 degrees centigrade which is about 116 degrees farenhieght(sp)

for anyone to leave their dog in a car at the moment and then say its nothing to do with anyone else is  why take the dog to a car boot if you're not going to walk round with it

i've nothing really to add that hasn't already been said.......not that that's going to stop me!

HOW DARE people leave a dog to cook in a hot car   and then act as if it's no one else's business. it's everyone's business - just as it's everyone's business if a child is being bullied by big kids in the street.

.....and i'm not surprised it spoiled your day, it would mine too Whippets Rule. I don't even leave dij for 2 minutes in heat like we're having at the minute - in the winter it's a different matter, but it's just torture at this time of year

when i first started reading this i scrolled back up to see where in the country you came from as id heard a woman moaning today at the car boot sale id been to.apparently she had a caravan and was staying in it with her hubby and dog.(she had a little yorkie with her) and shed put the dog in the car and the police were called out.she was absolutely furious!she was going on and on about how she wanted to complain to someone but didnt know who to complain to. (w00t) i asked her if she knew that dogs died in cars in warm weather and that in the temperatures wed been having recently to leave a dog inside one was totally irresponsible.she then started on me!(ha!biiiiig mistake!) :- " so i put her right on a few home truths. she was told what its like to be slowly cooked and roasted in an oven etc etc.and she didnt like it one bit!i told her if she was an animal lover them rather than complaining to the police and complaining about who had 'shopped' her she ought to go on bended knee and thank them for saving her dogs life! she ended up being very embarrassed as by now quite a crowd had drawn round to hear what she was shouting about.some of them were folk with their dogs.luckily they didnt take her part and a few of them joined in and told her off in no uncertain terms!the boot sale i was at is in burscough which is near liverpool and a lot of the folk there are scousers and they arent known for being the shy retiring type!i think this should be a criminal offence if it isnt already and people who do this ought to be given a stiff fine

Too flippin right it should be an offence (if it isn't already).

Why, oh WHY, can some people not understand, that a metal box on wheels + sunshine = AN OVEN.

Its times like that you are ashamed to be the same `species ` as these `people ` isnt it ,

At Leeds with having 3 dogs entered there was no way I could carry all my stuff AND handle 3 dogs :( , so I took the dogs in FIRST , , Put them on the chains on the benches ( asked Dolly` :huggles: to keep an eye ) and then went back for my cage and bag

It was 8 am and the car had already got warm , even though there was no sun out at all .

Getting in the car at 3ish was like getting into an oven , (w00t) even though I had moved it into the shade a couple of hours earlier :- " I dont have AC  :( so me and the gang was well windswept with all windows open

Just read yesterday that some criminally irresponsible people/murderers left their Newfie & another dog in their car for 4 HOURS last Wednesday  (hottest day since 1911) while they were in Garden Centre. The poor Newfie died :( & the other dog was in a bad way. The RSPCA are apparently 'considering' prosecution.

I'd like to slow roast them.

How anyone could leave any dog in a car in that heat for 5 minutes is beyond me but a Newfie with that huge shaggy coat - it just defies belief. 4 HOURS - do they have a braincell???

OH was at the Royal International Air Tattoo last weekend, and he said that amongst all the amazing planes and arial displays, the one announcement that got the BIGGEST cheer from the crowd was when they said the stewards had smashed the window of a car in the carpark and rescued a dog who was almost overcome from the heat

You have every right to feel totally incensed, good on you for calling the police although they didnt arrive in time (nothing new there! (w00t) )

Just wanted to say it was lucky they encountered you & not ME as i would have had that poor little mite out in a flash & happily faced the consequences afterwards

These people make me sick :( Same as at shows, recently at E of E it was scorching hot & some idiot had left an affie in a people carrier!!!

I dont give a damn for the excuses "well i had to take the show stuff in first", as someone sensible has already said, get your dogs in first into the shade, ask someone to watch them THEN go & get your immaterial stuff.

I personally think anyone caught leaving a dog in a red hot car for even 10 minutes should be banned instantly for showing for at least the next year, see how fast it stops them then :D

I'm going to print some signs and leave them on peoples cars if they have left their dog in them. People are UNBELIEVABLE and ( in my opinion) should be made to sit in their car for an hour in a (fake) fur coat. That'll learn 'em!

I am sure the RSPCA is able to prosecute when dog is left in a car parked in the sun in summer, especially on hot days such as you have recently.

Well, as it stands at shows often people are called time & time again over the tannoy to say the dog is in distress & many minutes pass with the car reg given & pleas for the owners to return. Only on the last knockings if the owners still do not come forth are the RSPCA informed & then maybe able to react.

This should NOT be the case, people are warned well in advance DO NOT LEAVE YOUR DOGS IN HOT CARS. More often than not there are even tents provided for unentered dogs so there is no excuse, also benching areas in the shade inside the show for dogs that are entered so why leave them shut in a hot car at all  b

At E of E at least 4 times the same message came out to the owners to please return to their vehicle & when they finally did i suspect they huffed off with the poor dog with some inadequate excuse.

AND they will i no doubt do the same thing at the very next show & wait for the final announcement before they rush out & retreive the poor dog :(

I think its time things were done differently, forget the tannoy warnings, if a dog is found to be left for more than 5 minutes in these ridiculous temperatures, GET IT OUT STRAIGHT AWAY & impose an instant ban on the people from exhibiting their dogs at further shows for a certain period.

They'd soon learn :- "

agree with you nina.hit them where it hurts, stop them showing.after all folk who show dogs are supposed to be dog lovers arent they?so theres no excuse for this sort of behaviour.id do the same as you,get the dog out and worry about the consequenses later.
