On our lovely Christmas morning walk today Sparky suffered a vicious attack. We were just about to enter the woods when a ?Jack Russell ran out of an open door and attacked from behind. He has suffered about 9 bites to his legs, abdomen and side. the only thing that saved him from much more severe injuries was that the kids insisted he wear his Christmas coat. It was a lovely morning and far too warm for him to wear a coat but I relented and put it on him. Thank goodness I did because it took the force of some of the attack. The whole episode lasted just a short period of time but the damage inflicted during that time was frightening. Peter had to use his feet to get the dog off and I managed to scramble Sparky into my arms and turn him and I into a fence shielding him with my jacket.

All the while the owner was yelling to kick him off which was what Peter did anyway. It turns out the dog is a rescue and it would appear the owner is at the end of her tether but obviously we will take the matter further so I don't want to go into that too much yet.

During the frenzied attack Sparky did not retaliate once. We have always said Sparky only knows how to play, usually too much, and even though he was crying in pain he did not attempt to have a go back. He is being well cared for today, all his wounds are cleaned, they are not tears just bite marks, and he is very stiff on his legs, he has spent all day on the settee and will be checked over by a proper vet tomorrow, daughter Sarah is a doctor and has been caring for him all day, but he will be seen tomorrow morning just to check he is ok.

oh jenny im so sorry this has happened it must have ruined your christmas. :( i hope poor sparky recovers well and that the owners pay the vets bill.be careful with puncture wounds they are more serious than tears in that the bacterium on the dogs tooth is injected below the skin so tends to get septic.just get some antibiotics and keep the wound open till it heals from the inside up to the skin surface and keep it clean.fingers croossed poor lad is ok.its awful when a gentle little soul is attacked and wont even fight back.hugs and kisses to sparky :huggles:

Oh no poor Sparky what a terrible thing to happen for all of you, sending lots of well wishes for a speedy healing process for him and I hope you have got over the shock a bit yourself too :huggles: :luck: :luck:

what a horrible start to a special day .

glad sparky is ok , im sure he will be fine

Oh, poor Sparky, I hope he is o.k. soon. What a horrible thing to happen, especially on Christmas day. :(

Get well soon Sparky, what an awful thing to happen :(

Brought tears to my eyes..If the dog that attacked him is that much of a pain, it should be tethered, rehomed or PTS.

Kisses to Sparky

Poor Sparky, what an awful shame :( :( :(

I bet you were really shaken up too - I keep Bach's Rescue Remedy for all these sorts of things - some for you and some for him is great at times like these

If you happen to have some arnica caplets at home, they are also excellent for bruising and shock.

Hope very much that Sparky will be over this soon - lots of socialising with NICE dogs to help him get over this would be good. :luck:  :huggles:

How awful for both of you! Wishing Sparky a speedy recovery!! :huggles:

I am so upset reading about this :'( ,poor Sparky & poor you :(

I've pm'ed you

Poor Sparky we wish him a speedy recovery, We have been attacked before too its a horrible experience. I hope he is ok, and all heals well.

I am so sorry, poor Sparky, hope he will recover with no scars, mental of physical. Bite punctures can get infected and form an absess, I would definitely watch them and see vet as soon as practical. :luck: :luck: :luck:

Poor little man, arnica cream is also good for bruising if there's not too much open skin.

How amazing he never retaliated. Big kisses to him, and hope he gets well soon. :huggles: :*

Awww poor Sparky :( hope he is feeling better soon

This event must have spoiled your christmas so all the best to you and Sparky for 2006

Poor Sparky, How awful for you all. Give him lots of :huggles: and  from all of us and let us all know what the Vet says.

if they know the dogs dangerous then why didnt they take better care not to let it have a chance to attack.

more a case of bad owner than bad dog. (ok I know the dogs agressive but if the owner took precautions it wouldnt of happened)

Hope Sparkys feeling better today.

What a terrible event, it is so frightening for both Sparky and you :( At least his injuries are not too bad.

I am sorry to say I am not the greatest fan of Jack Russels, or rather I think too many people have them as pets without a clue that a very go-ey terrier - Archie has been gone for in 3 seperate occasions by different JRTs :(

I would try as soon as possible to reintroduce Sparky to a nice JRT - to overcome his fear as dogs to tend to get preferences against certain breeds after somehting like this, Archie will hardly walk past a JRT now without a lot of persuading.

Hope he's feeling a lot sparkier ( ;) ) today  :luck:

poor Sparky, get better soon :huggles: :huggles:
