On our lovely Christmas morning walk today Sparky suffered a vicious attack. We were just about to enter the woods when a ?Jack Russell ran out of an open door and attacked from behind. He has suffered about 9 bites to his legs, abdomen and side. the only thing that saved him from much more severe injuries was that the kids insisted he wear his Christmas coat. It was a lovely morning and far too warm for him to wear a coat but I relented and put it on him. Thank goodness I did because it took the force of some of the attack. The whole episode lasted just a short period of time but the damage inflicted during that time was frightening. Peter had to use his feet to get the dog off and I managed to scramble Sparky into my arms and turn him and I into a fence shielding him with my jacket.
All the while the owner was yelling to kick him off which was what Peter did anyway. It turns out the dog is a rescue and it would appear the owner is at the end of her tether but obviously we will take the matter further so I don't want to go into that too much yet.
During the frenzied attack Sparky did not retaliate once. We have always said Sparky only knows how to play, usually too much, and even though he was crying in pain he did not attempt to have a go back. He is being well cared for today, all his wounds are cleaned, they are not tears just bite marks, and he is very stiff on his legs, he has spent all day on the settee and will be checked over by a proper vet tomorrow, daughter Sarah is a doctor and has been caring for him all day, but he will be seen tomorrow morning just to check he is ok.
