My lovely Rita is booked in to be spayed this Friday, and I am wondering what to expect in terms of aftercare and how quick they recover from the op. She is a pretty lively girl, and there are loads of steps where we are. I am sure the nurses will fill me in but it would be nice to hear from other whippet owners about what to expect after the op. She has already had one season and for various reasons including underlying health issues I've decided spaying is best for her, but it is still a bit scary. Obviously I have made sure she will be given the appropriate anaesthetic and that she is seeing an experienced vet.

She is such a pretty girl, what a lovely photograph.

I had Lilly spayed in January. She is a very bouncy 4 year old and jumps / bounces a lot so it was a worry.

She was kept on a lead for 3 weeks with no walks for a while. Some vets say 2 weeks but whippets are very atheletic and I agree with my vet that 3 weeks is better to allow the internal stitches to heal.

One thing to watch with both whippets and greyhounds is the anaesthetic. They do not have body fat to help absorb the anaesthetic and frequently go back under. The vet will know this and will probably keep her in untill late in the day (recommended even though you may be desperate to have her home) She may be very drowsy when she gets home. If she is allowed on funtiture, do not allow her to jump on (or off) herself for a few weeks as she may tear the internal stitches same applies to the stairs keep her on a lead (carry her at first) and take them slowly. Most vets use a special more expensive anaesthetic on W & G hounds unfortunately, I forget what it is called but it is the modern one of preference.

I hope all goes well

She is a very pretty girl.

Cant really add to Eves post, other than to wish you luck, I'm sure she will bounce back quickly- I had my girl spayed after her first season, and within 24hrs time she was asking to go for a walk!!! They recommend a light diet for a day or two, mine love white fish and rice. :)

Give her something soft and warm to eat as she has had a tube down her throat during the op and will have a sore throat.

Its amazing just how resiliant they are,No long gallops or jumping for a while though

Thanks for these thoughts and suggestions - i will get a barrier on the stairs, which she loves to run up and down.
