Hi everybody,

Our lovely Lurcher Spike, who is just two years old,has suddenly lost interst in the lure.He has always been rag mad,but at the last few Lurcher shows,he has refused to chase, and ran back to my hubby. He ran on the hurdles, but still not with the passion he used to chase. We have checked his feet for injuries etc,so i don,t know if it is just boredom.Show him a bunny and he will chase it all day long.He is a bright dog,so i am not sure if he just gets fed up with nothing to get hold of at the end.He used to be a brilliant coursing dog,and won at Tatton park last year.We love him no matter what, but just wondered if anybody has had similar happen to them.We don,t think he has been barged, but it is a possiblity,so again, this may have put him off. I would love to get him interested again, but not sure what to do.

Perhaps chasing the real thing has made him realise there is just a dead thing to chase! Could be.

you could try spreading tomato sauce or meat paste on the lure

IMO he sounds as if hes bored so putting something nice on the lure

may do the trick

Amnda he needs a kill. get him a rabbit, i think youre maybe racing him too often without him getting a "result" at the end. give him a break for a few weeks and in the interim get him a nice squealy rabbit :- "

Hi John,

You are in the same mind as Pete.Spike is his baby,so he is a bit dissapointed that he does not seem to enjoy the racing any more. Will try a rabbit skin on our lure, and see if it helps.I don,t undertstand it,as Finn still as keen as ever, and winning a lot. But,i guess, different breeding etc.Plus Finn is not the brightest :- "

Hi Amanda,

I am of the same opinion as John,a rabbit could be just the thing to put things right.

Also when training with a skin over the lure you could also add a squeaker to the lure and let him rag it for a while. That nearly always works in my experience with greyhounds over the years.

I also agree that dogs do get stale and a layoff and different stimulas is often the key, if mine get stale I walk in different routes and leave off the running for fun or training for a week or so and then return when the dog seems more focused again.

Hope this helps,Linda

Bright dogs are the worst to keep interested in racing as the plastic lure will have no value to them ...... If he's on live then there's no reason to want to chase a bit of plastic or dead fur :) .....My one racing Whippet bitch left a race (that she was leading) to quarter the field as she'd picked up a scent :b ....The thicker dogs will not reason and will just chase anything ...my friend calls them point and press dogs lol ....A kill might gee him up a bit but keep the fur to go on the lure .... The other reason for dogs to go off racing is because they've been hit, scared or walloped by dogs they've raced with .... Its like self preservation if they think they're going to be hurt out there ... :luck:

Hi Linda,

Your opinion is greatly appreciated. The census seems to be that he needs something new to regain his interest. It has been great to have such a lot of feedback. How,s your donkey doing???

Hi,

It is all beginning to make sense.I have never seen Spike egt barged etc,but it is hard to watch every moment they are racing. He definetely seems to pull up when another dog runs near him,but not sure if that is just because he is fed up.

amanda to me it sounds like you dont want to give the dog a kill ? there is no point dressing the lure up with fur squaky sounds after a while it will do the same get board the dog seem very bright you should take great adventage of that and let him do what nautre intended for these dogs to catch live prey lure coursing can be fun but you will get even great pleasure out of it putting its wits agents live prey my the best animal win

Hi,

He does go out after live prey, but not so much through the summer.I agree with what you say,but it is very hard to find permission.I will not risk my dogs being taken off me for the sake of a kill.I am not at all against letting him hunt,as i realise that he what he has been bred to do.I love seeing him do what comes naturally,so you are wrong,i do want to give him a kill.

Amanda

hi im sure that some kind fella or ladie will let you come out with them if you ask its good to here that you want your dog to kill keep up the good work im sure he will come right
