My husband and I recently rehomed a 6 month old staff puppy she has a lovely temperament and is great with our 2 children. However she is having issues when it comes to going to toilet. She gets nervous or you talk to her or excited and wees everywhere. I do not want to get rid of her but i cant have her doing this.

You'll probably find the advice for this on other threads. But the obvious things are; have a place that you take her to to wee. e.g a place in the back garden. Then use a key word such as 'wee wee', so initiate her going to the toilet. Do this every hour or so, especially after she eats and drinks. Does she wee during the night? Does she poo inside also?

It is probably just nerves. Please give her a chance to gain confidence. Try doing some reward based obedience training or trick training with her. Take a look at Kiko Pup on YouTube for ideas.

If you chastise her at all, or even give an exasperated sigh, she will get more nervous and it will all take longer. It is perfectly understandable to be fed up but she is not doing it on purpose. There is probably a lovely dog waiting to get out :)

Thank you for your advice. She goes in a crate at night and doesn't see in there and she does not poo inside either. We have sectioned her off from the front room now as she was ruining the sofas but wanted her to be a family dog so do not like doing this.

She can join the family when her bladder is empty. She will improve as her confidence improves.

It may be that the previous owners chastised her for weeing in the house when she was a little puppy. This will make her anxious around people as she would not have understood what they were on about!

At six months she has the mental ability of a one year old child so try to remember that when training her. Lots of encouragement and lots of patience. Ignore mistakes (that's all they are!) and praise any good, calm behaviour.

Take her to the garden regularly, rather than just letting her out, praise her well and give her a high value reward immediately she toilets. Do not wait for her to approach you for the treat as she will become muddled as to why she got it.
