Our family staffy is 15 years old and nearly deaf. He has been a wonderful family dog and shared all our joys and sorrows and given great devotion to all family members. We have a new baby girl in the family, 2 months old, and the dog just does not like the baby crying, or us talking to her. We are not sure whether he is showing aggression or just does not know what this thing is that has entered his life, and can make so much noise. He just barks and barks and barks. This is stressing us all out!! Please any advice will be welcome.

Hi, sorry can't really give advise as my dog was blind but not deaf so not sure what the older dog is thinking. But I know that all dogs 'worry' if a baby cries and as yours probably just 'feels' the crying instead of hearing it- he might be unsure what to do.

He sounds completely bewildered. I would take great care to separate him and the baby as he is too old to cope with all the upheaval. Some dogs love being in the car and if he is one of them I would settle him in there while the baby gets all the attention. Once baby is settled in bed or elsewhere he can have lots of attention.

Never think that a dog "should" like babies or children. They only really like children if they were brought up with them and it was a pleasant experience. Adult dogs who didn't mix with children as puppies can be very worried by them and therefore unsafe around them.

Thank you tiina5704, and gypsymum for your comments - I will bear in mind your thoughts and recommendations. Yes he does like to ride in the car - sits in front like a navigator because the baby is in the back in her car seat, we are VERY careful as I am sure the dog finds the crying distressing.
