Please could someone give me some tips on how to practise getting a dog to stand properly in the show ring? Is it best to use treats etc - thanks.

I use treats when they are puppies and then when they older you can just put your hand in your pocket and they think there is something for them. Then at the end of the exercise they get a treat.

Some dogs are different and don't need treatd but I think they tend to enjoy it if there is food envolved.

Find a local ringcraft, they will help you.

I had thought about joining a ringcraft club but thought they might find it amusing that I would be taking along a lurcher rather than a pedigree pup!!

Emily is there anything in the k9 FAQ section that might help? I know we've had quite a few discussions on training littlies.

Surely the ringcraft wouldn't mind - there are lurcher shows too aren't there? So your baby's gotta learn!

:)) I would give ringcraft a try. At my ringcraft we take anybody whether it's pedigree or not. Many people just want to socialise their dog without going down the obedience route. You would be very welcome at ours as we have lots of lurcher and terrier shows round here. But it would be a long way to come for an hour or two.

Look on the Kennel Club website and it will give you the name of your nearest ones, then you can ask and at worst be told no, but then best could be yes.

Definitely, look for a ringcraft classes, even if you could train your dog to stand and home or in your park, it is totally different ballgame in the actual ring with all the other dogs around.

Thanks for your advice and comments that I should get my lurcher to ringcraft - I really do want to take him and now that I feel I might not be laughed at for contemplating taking a lurcher along then I will give my local ringcraft a call and see what they say - will let you know how things go!

Have just contacted the local Ringcraft club and the lady was so helpful and friendly and said that Zair and I would be more than welcome to attend on a Tuesday evening - she said makes no differance if he is not a pedigree as plenty of lurcher shows and also exception classes for him so he certainly is welcome! I am so pleased and really looking forward to nest Tuesday - thanks to you all for giving me the push I needed to give the Ringcraft Club a call!! (this means I am now out training with Zair on Tues, Wed & Fri!)

Rigcraft classes are indispensable! I would've been lost without ours,it teaches them so much more than just ring etiquette.

Roll on Zair's first show then!
