SUMMER
Summer is a 2 year old greyhound girl. Summer has a black 'tuxedo' coat that could do with gaining some condition. She is a bit unusual in that she has only half a tail, an old injury resulting from an accident while racing.
Summer is a lovely little character, very affectionate and always looking for the extra pet. She may only have half a tail, but she never misses an opportunity to wag it! She is still a newbie to the kennels, so we will update her profile when we get to know her a bit better.
So far Summer has gotten on very well with the other greyhounds in the kennels, and we think that once she learns what toys are for she's going to have a new love in her life! She is a bubbly, happy girl and would enjoy another doggie companion to play with.
Summer has not been tested with cats or small dogs yet, but these can be done prior to adoption if needed. She has not yet lived in a home environment, so new adopters will need to be a bit patient and understanding for the first couple of weeks after adoption and allow her time to learn the house rules.
Summer is currently in kennels in Ireland, and can be transported via Kerry Greyhounds to the UK or Europe if a suitable home offer comes up. This will be organised and paid for by Kerry Greyhounds, and we ask only for a donation to help cover costs. She will be neutered, vaccinated and microchipped prior to adoption and a homecheck will be required as part of the adoption procedure.
**UPDATE 06/2010**
Summer got to spend a day out of the kennels recently, and took part in the Kerry Greyhound Connection annual jamboree in Kerry. She seemed to really enjoy her day out, and behaved very well with the noisy crowds and numerous dogs.
Lovely Summer has put on some weight now and looks super. Her thick kennel coat is slowly shedding out too, getting replaced with a beautiful sleek, shiny black coat. Her short tail sets her apart from the other greyhounds and makes her really unusual, especially when she wags it!
Summer was around small dogs during the jamboree and behaved very good with them. She wasn't phased by the throng of people and children either. She is a good natured girlie who will make a beautiful companion for someone and has a lot of love to give.
Like most greyhounds, Summer will not need a huge amount of exercise. She will be content with two 20min walks a day and perhaps a chance to stretch her legs offlead in a secure area once or twice a week.
In general greyhounds are calm, mannerly dogs who are well used to being handled. They can fit very well in to a wide range of different lifestyles and usually adjust to the home life very quickly. Their soft, easy going nature often makes them ideal to live in a family with children, while their love of lazing around and low exercise requirements can make them perfect for the elderly. Greyhounds also dont shed as much as other dog breeds such as retrievers or labradors, and this can make them suitable to live with allergy sufferers.

Summer is lucky enough to be in a foster home in Ireland now, where she is fast learning the in’s and out’s of home life. She is a GORGEOUS little girl with a fantastic, fun loving personality. This little girl exudes happiness and truly enjoys life.
Summer came to the National Pet Expo in Dublin recently and helped us show what fantastic pets greyhounds are. She behaved impeccably amongst the bustling crowds and hundreds of dogs of all shapes and sizes. She was never overwhelmed or annoyed, greeting everyone and everything with a wag of her half-tail and a big smiley face.
Summer’s fosterer has this to say about her:
“Summer is settling in great. She will sleep though the night in her crate in the kitchen. Summer has not once whined or barked at night. During the day she is happy to potter around the house and garden and will settle on a dog bed when you are watching TV or having dinner. Summer is great with my other dogs. To date Summer has not had any "accidents" in the house. Summer is the most affectionate greyhound. She loves to come alongside you, lick your hand and push her head under your hand for rub. Initially she would jump up as she wanted to say hi and give you a kiss. However, now she has completed her introductions she does this less and will settle for kissing your hand.
Summer is a great dog and, if circumstances, were different one I would love to keep - I cant give her any better recommendation than that. According to William Carlow Williams "In Summer the song sings itself" - well with this Summer the dog sells herself!”
This little girl is a real gem of a dog and is going to be a fantastic family member for someone.
