SUZIE

**UPDATED: DECEMBER 2012**

Location: Foster home in Norfolk, UK.

Key Points: Sweet, sensitive, home-ready, good with dogs, shy of strangers.

Sweet Suzie is a special little girl who was saved in the nick of time from being sold on as a brood bitch. She is a medium sized, 8 year old ex-racing greyhound who could do with a bit of TLC to get some healthy shine back into her dull coat. She also has many scars that tell of a harsh past, but is now healthy and content. This very gentle, sensitive girl deserves to find a soft sofa to call her own, and not continue the life of kennelled breeding machine. Thankfully, she now has her chance.

~ Personality ~

Generally: Sensitive and in-tune with her humans. Shy with strangers.

Suzie really is a special little lady. She has successfully won the adoration of everyone who has spent any time with her, and has left a trail of broken hearts on her way to Kerry Greyhounds UK. She is a super gentle, very affectionate little girl who loves to be involved in whatever her family are doing. She is going to make a very loving and loyal companion. Despite her past, she is willing to learn to trust again and wants very much to receive and give affection. She very much wants to do what is asked of her, and to be a good girl.

Suzie is a sensitive, intuitive girl who is very good at picking things up. She is nervous towards people she has not met before, especially men, but makes great attempts to build up the courage to meet strangers. She tries so very hard to please her ‘parents’. Sudden movements from unfamiliar people will make her jump, but give her just a bit of time and calmness and she will venture forth to make friends. Once she knows you, you most definitely have a true friend for life. This girl is beautifully affectionate and loving with those she knows, and actively wants to be loved and accepted by those around her.

Suzie has not yet started to play with toys, but we know she has a playful side just waiting to show itself. She will play a bit with other dogs, but acts as though this is a new experience for her. This should develop nicely with time and encouragement.

~ In the Home ~

Generally: home savvy.

Suzie has spent all her life so far in kennels, but you would not know this to look at her now! She has settled into the home life as though she has always been there, and gets on splendidly with her foster parents. Again, this wee lady will bend over backwards to do what is asked of her and she is very eager to learn and to please. Raised voices would greatly frighten Suzie, and are completely unnecessary as she is such a gem – she never puts a foot wrong. She is housetrained, quiet as a mouse, not destructive, doesn’t steal food and has been left with just other dogs for company with no issues at all.

~ Other Animals ~

Generally: Excellent with other medium-large sized dogs. Has not seen small dogs yet.

Suzie is very well behaved with other dogs though has not been specifically introduced to small dog breeds yet. This will be carried out prior to adoption. She is a very calm, gentle girl who has a playful side just waiting to come out. She is extremely non-confrontational and will just back off if another dog is being loud, overly boisterous or is uncomfortable with her presence. In her foster home, she looks to her foster hounds for guidance and reassurance if she becomes stressed. As such, going to a home with another chilled out, confident dog would be a huge benefit to her. She would also slot excellently into an existing pack as she is very much a get-along-with-everyone kind of hound. She has shared her foster home with a cat previously, though they did not spend much time in the same room. This would need to be tested more thoroughly before she is deemed as completely suitable to live with cats.

~ Out and About ~

Generally: Perfect on lead, shy of strangers, especially if being loud/in a group.

Little Suzie walks like a gem on the lead, again behaving impeccably as she loves to please. She will keep pace with you and is happy to go at whatever speed you choose. In keeping with her current nervousness of unfamiliar people, she will be very friendly and social with other dogs but shy of their owners until she knows them. She is nervous of strangers and frightened of groups of people being loud or boisterous. Her foster parents are walking her in busy areas frequently to get her over this hump in her confidence, and this gentle and gradual socialisation will need to be continued by her forever family.

Suzie also loves riding in the car and settles very quickly, seeming to really enjoy the motion. Like most greyhounds, Suzie is all about her home comforts and so will not need a huge amount of exercise. She will be content with two 30min walks a day and perhaps a chance to stretch her legs offlead in a secure area once or twice a week. Because she can become frightened and her first choice is to flee, Suzie needs to form a bond with her new owners and have some recall work before she can be let offlead in unsecured areas. With some time and recall training, this is entirely possible, just not initially due to her flight response.

~ Where Can I Live? ~

This little mite has had a hard 8 years and now needs a relatively quiet home to retire to and relax in. She requires owners that will be willing to continue to help her gain confidence in the outside world, but who will also let her continue at her own pace and not push her. Most importantly, Suzie needs love and TLC and to be deeply included in the family and its activities. She truly loves her people and her furry siblings, and gives 200% of herself at all times. She deserves to spend the rest of her life with the nicest of creature comforts in a safe, stable, trustful environment. She will form an extremely strong bond with whomever gives her the space on her sofa, and is going to be a very special hound for someone.
