This is for those who may be lucky enough to have a TV catch up facility for the Talking Pictures channel (freeview 82). On Sunday (8th September) I caught the “Out of Town” programme which featured lurchers and other sighthounds (gaze hounds). Really interesting and informative and would be enjoyed by anyone drawn towards sighthounds.

Sadly, I don't think we'll be able to get that, but thank you. I had a google though - is this an episode repeated from 1981? I was interested that the page I found it on mentioned a 'related video' - Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons. Not sure how that relates to lurchers!

I wouldn't be able to access that either, but thanks for heads-up. Nothing- nothing- is like lurchers, though I suspect sci-fi could be close to the mark at times.

Though in Jasper's case - Horror movie? Disaster movie? Nail-biting thriller? 🤣

Not able to access the channel? A shame. Actually, it does have the odd decent programme. The “Maigret” series with Bruno Cremer - the French 🇫🇷 dialogue is slow enough not to necessitate sub titles. Back to the “Out of Town” programme, it dealt with the cross breeding of pure sighthounds with other breeds to create the perfect lurcher. Pure sighthounds will follow prey exactly - duplicating their swerves, etc., whereas lurchers, having more intelligence as a result of the crossbreeding, will ‘lurch’ in order to circumvent the prey’s escape. I’ve always said that, in my experience with whippets, they are not the sharpest knife in the cutlery drawer. So there you go, should a question be thrown at you at a pub quiz re the origin of the word “lurcher” for crossbred sighthounds, you’ll amaze the other contestants. Actually, Jack Hargreaves referred to them as ‘gazehounds’.

I always thought 'lurcher' was Romany for 'thieving cur' 🤣 Mr N thinks there's a chance we can get that channel, so fingers crossed...
