It will bring up some great names of past and present, but in these three classes !

Best yard/pound dog

Best yard/pound bitch

Also include the approx years they ran to any newcomers to the sport !

The best can only beat what is put against them at the time

If I suggest Harry Field's Black Rani as the Best Bitch from Hemel - who would have heard of her?

A black Bitch who ran in 24lbs group, won WCRA weight group in 1970. Passport number 69.70

Second only to Snowflake at BWRA - I was told

Born April 66 from the Fields own Bitch Penny Black from their stud dog Blue Peter

She was mum to RCh Peanut and other open class runers (If You Can - being one)

I have seen this bitch break 9 seconds over 150 yds - hand timed

And beat Open class 30lbers off scratch!

However, at that time in our history there was little pedigree racing and if you were good enough you had to race with all types of 'whippet'.

Best Dog - Tipper owned by Ken Spreadbury Blue Fawn 28lber from Andover

Mulitiple Open and Championship class winner

I can't remember Tipper being beaten at Abbotts Ann over 3 years (1976- 8)

Record holder in 28lbs class :sweating:

Always ran in blinkers but I never saw him disqualified

Fantastic early pace - would win distance races by yards.

Was a good match for Picketty Witch, White Lady, etc. at that time.

What other class? (w00t)

I can remember Harry Fields, he often came to Moira in the 1980's. At the time he raced a 26lb bitch called Briary Lass, his other racer at the time I can't remember, but he had two very elderly bitches one of which was RCh Peanut, the other being her sister. Harry was very knowledgeable about racing in general., he and his wife Muriel I think, came in there Reliant Robin, this would be around '83/84.

Two of my favourites when I was a kid ! Picketty Witch and Tipper. The `Witch` was awesome and I met Terry Peart a few years ago at Gatwick Airport and we had a great chat about the `old days` !

Tipper, I remember the little semi circle blinkers he used to wear ! I remember Ken took them off him at an Open or Champs at Plumpton late on in his career and he fought ! 99% sure of that, but it musn`t take from one of the `legends` of the sport !

Bob Snells Bambi was a real light weight flyer as was Beetle in my early days ! Then on to Teddy Flash and Trish Billinghams Silver Stream (One of my top three !)

Oh I could go on ........................... ! !

there have been some great stars of the past.what about Pat Rossers little 16 lb bitch ZIPPA. She has to be one of the greats and her owners were such nice people.

Best lightweight bitch has to be Fed Sup/WCRA CH Agile Dream winner of the Whippet News Top Ten 4 times Supa stars and so many Supremes I lost count - Steve could put us right on that, as an 18lb she gave her all against any weight dog or bitch over any distance of both bends and straights rarely running a bad race.

Middle distance dog has to be Fed Supreme/WCRA Ch Striker winner of the Whippet News Top Ten 3 times plus Supa Stars weighing 23lb he never ran as veteran as an injury put paid to his racing career at 4 years old but he managed 23 Supreme wins and untold opens, he was equally as good on the bends as straights and would take on all comers both pedi and non pedi.

Finally my heavyweight choice has to be Fed Sup.WCRA Ch Sporting CH Gracious. A Supreme Fed Champion at 12 months old a WCRA Champion at 13 months old she gained her VC Championship coming out of retirement at 9. She won the Whippet News Top Ten was places in Supa Stars could never win it as she never did enough counting opens. She equalled her sire 23 Supremes wins not bad for a 29lb bitch running from the scratch box and broke 9 seconds for 150 yards on more than one occasion, like Dream and Striker she could win over any distance and against any opposition.
