Does anyone know what has been passed at The Whippet Club AGM which will affect whippet racing?

Due to family commitments I was unable to attend.

I couldn't go due to a rather nasty bout of apathy but I hear that nothing happened.

Hi All

We also did not attend but I heard at Racing today (Newmarket) that changes to WCRA rules got thrown out. KC Lawyers not happy with the suggested changes. So some one is telling 'porky pies' as at the talk-in I'm sure the word was "that we could not discuss the wording of the rule changes - as they had been agreed with the Lawyers - only the implementation dates".

Comments anyone?

Hi Rob,

Went to both. Don't remember the quote at the Talk-In re the above quote, but do recall yesterday -at least my interpretation of it which may or may not be exact; as we all interpret what is said in a slghtly different way. This is why written papers for each item are so useful, as one can go back to them. However, I digress. It would appear that when Dennis wrote to the KC on 25thof that month to inform them of the decisions taken by the Committee after the talk in the KC replied that it was unacceptable due to the human rights act!!! :- " We were told that the KC are most reluctant to introduce any mandatory rules, and that even though conversations were had between Ms Crisco and Denis, and although there is sympathy within the KC for what the WC is endeavouring to do, they cannot countenance it. All they can countenance is the same wording as that found within Show Rules/Schedules " ...a dog should be entire.." (Perhaps the KC does not feel empowered to approve any ruling within an area not within their remit. Maybe things have changed between then and now, who knows the machinations of the KC?) What this means for racing bred whippets is that it is down the the owners of bitches and dogs to do as they see fit. The discussion was interesting, and one of the show people (of whom there were but 4 or maybe 5 present!), stated that this issue doesn't arise as they do not cover bitches with non-entire males and neither would a non entire male be put up for show. Denis said that in the show world they had done their level best to produce healthy stock by selectively breeding only from entire males (or words to that effect). He claimed that this works, although it does take time. I did feel sympathy for them as they had tried very hard to do what was good for the health of pups, whilst still maintaining a system which allowed owners of affected dogs to enjoy their chosen activity. (I listened to the discussion and was left wondering why, with such a wealth of knowledge out there, they did not bring that to the racing track. Perhaps had they stayed with the sport it would have been all the better for their input).

Bearing in mind the rationale given for the KC rejecting the proposal, one can only stand back and wonder how The Breed Council will fare if, or when, it endeavours to introduce DNA profiling of whippets, which was one of the items on the agenda!

Everyone who stood down was re-elected, so stood back up. There were many apologies read out, but I was left wondering why the turnout was so poor.

All the clubs are solvent and Angie Sawyer was awarded the WCRA sporting award, (her face was a picture I wouldn't have missed it for the world), there was no young sports person as there were no nominations and the other two awards went to people whose names (sadly) I cannot recall.

That was about it really, if I have missed anything, or misinterpreted anything said, perhaps someone who was there can clarify/amend/correct the above.

I found it informative and interesting and hope the above gives a flavour of the meeting. :sweating:

Great news about Angie winning that award - she wholeheartedly deserves it

Yeahhhhh! Well Done Angie.

Thanks for the report Carmel.
